This pipeline which would bring oil from Canada's tar sands to the Texas Gulf Coast needs a presidential permit to move forward.

Polls show that most people support it because of effective arguments from proponents that couch this pipeline in terms of energy security.

But the pipeline endangers the environment in many ways. It cuts through precious aquifers in the arid West

Wikipedia has an excellent list. And GLOBAL WARMING WOULD HAVE MADE HURRICANE SANDY WEAKER. Sandy was a tropical storm coming from the east that collided with a massive blizzard from Canada.

The completely separate questions of whether the solutions are worthwhile aren't addressed on this site

All you Alarmists always preach the evidence yet you have no proof beyond skewed computer models and half graphs.

@riff raffcheck the data from ice cores for the past 400000 years. Every 10000 years or so our temperature has spiked to 2-6 degrees warmer than it is today

As a software engineer I have to add something. Computer models are a joke if you don't know what their variables are scaled on.

Most models can't be done without assumed properties of some variables. For example to calculate a model of shooting a projectile across a distance on earth has a few knowns and a few assumed variables.

There is so much mysticism involved around software that makes people believe it over common sense. A bunch of lame arguments not backed up by evidence.

Even though I am not a climatologist as an computer scientist I can smell bs from a mile away.

I don't have to make up reasons to have software engineers exist. So I can concentrate on my craft instead of making belligerent predictions to hype up concern in my field.

Samsung Announces Enormous Phone Called Galaxy Mega""Somewhere at Samsung's sprawling campus deep in the headquarters of the mobile phone division there is a Powerpoint slide with a simple line graph.

It does not note that the marketing budget for Samsung's enormous phones is much larger than for the smaller phones.

It does not note that Samsung also typically reserves its best hardware for its large phones.

It does not note that Samsung no longer even makes flagship phones with screens smaller than about 4. 5 inches.

and has succeeded with a phone that's never had a larger screen than 4 inches.

Whenever a reviewer says phones like the newly announced Samsung Galaxy Mega which has either a 6. 3

-or 5. 8-inch screen whichever you prefer is absurd to use that it requires two hands that its screen sucks up battery life that it doesn't fit in a pocket that

when you use it to make phone calls you look like a child with his head down on a school desk that these phones represent the worst tendencies of Samsung a company with the creativity

And so Samsung continues on the path laid out by this graph blowing past the 6-inch mark with a phone that is larger than several gadgets called tablets.

This phone is over half a foot long. That is a fact with numbers. This phone has middling specs.

It's not even as fast in the oblique and increasingly useless list of numbers that constitute speed as the Galaxy S 4

I will have an app and cables to jump start my car lol. Not that I'm a fan of the prospect of this phone

but this was literally the worst written article I've ever read here. Almost entirely overly-angry biased spew.

I had apple friends that talked about hacking the ipad mini to be a phone

I cary around a phone and a tablet 95%of the time when I leave the house.

and bluetooth to tablets and a lot of people might just leave their phone at homes most days.

(or more with google voice) and 2 devices (just pay for the second device). I would love to be able to text on my tablet (not using an app to cheat texting

but actual texting like phones do). If that were the case I would probably have an 8-10 device and like a 3-4 device.

Big phones are here to stay. Reviewers hated the Galaxy Note. Turns out they were completely wrong.

I personally agree that this phone is going to be a little too large. But these reviewers seem to have a vendetta of sorts trying to correct their previous massive blunder.

Oh Lord: Popsci editors have hatred a tremendous towards anything not Apple...Give it up guys Apple is losing ground

I hope has the s4 specs with a monster screen>:>Da company with the creativity and aesthetic sensibility of a bundle of Swiss chardlol.

The phones are also amazing -and despite the plastic backing everyone complains about on the Galaxy S series it is a brilliant design b c it is lightweight cheap and replaceable

big phones sell! Long answer: don't think of this as phone. Think of it as the evolution of PC.

The future of laptops and netbooks. A laptop that fits your pocket that makes phone calls

and has 10 hours of battery! YES please! another news article whining about how big this phone is.

Again this is a multimedia pda consuption mobile office device. The bigger screen space is appreciated. My labtop and tablets makes phone calls

but will I hold it up to my ear? Probably not. They have bluetooth headsets if needed.

If needed. I have a galaxy note and when I hold up an iphone its screen looks like a minature toy.

Samsung is on the right path. Stick with your apples and I ll eat my oranges.

I thought in USA we prefer to put big engines big tires bright lights and bling bling on everything.

This cell phone is feeding the USA appetite. Dan bummer this wont fit in your NY skinny jeans. May

I suggest maybe finding some room in your Merse? Haha...Problem solved my friend!:My guess is that they are exploring the limits.

I just wish that they wouldn't neglect the lower end as they move up in size.

The only reason I bought a flagship 4. 7 phone is because it wasn't available in a 4. 3 size.

I'm all in for top of the line speed performance and high DPI screens. But I'm not keen on the high DPI screen getting to large to carry unobtrusively.

Replacement for the TV pretty soon. The people in Texas should like it. I hear everything is big there.

Certainly explains the screen name.;I sure do enjoy animated icons and yes big REALLY BIG cell phones too lol.

I'm torn between my dislike of enormous phones and my distaste for biased journalism...

Biased writing such as this is all too common on this website. Thanks Dan. Does it come with big@ss fries and a big@ss coke too?

me peering at a tiny screen. I make my calls with Skype on my laptop or PC.

Big screens. Good work Samsung! Bloomberg aint gonna like this one biti have a Samsung Note II

and it already feels normal in my hand. It only feels big for the first few hours

Big screens are SO AWESOME to use! I think the correct size for any phone is whatever is the biggest one you can hold with one hand.

Also people are going to have to quit being to cowardly to wear a fanny-pack too

and go ahead and admit we need fanny packs to be back in style for these larger phones.

There is an inverse relationship between screen/penis size. That is why I love large screen phones.

They give me a confidence that allows me to prosper. Women seem to find me more attractivei have secured employment and

Thank you big screen phones!!I remember when the first Galaxy Note came out. At the time it seemed similar in size to a Kindle...

so I felt that was a little big for a phone. I have an older Kindle Keyboard

and tried to imagine using it like a phone; the concept of possibly knocking myself out with it just because

I'd grabbed it in a rush to answer before it rolled to voicemail was...

) And now Samsung has an even bigger phone than that? Wow. But...I no longer hate the concept.

The virtual keyboards Samsung has made standard on all their*other*smartphones don't work as well for me.

My phone has replaced pretty much my computer. And tablets while super cool? Just still seem too large

and less portable than they could be. Let's be honest: you still can't put a tablet in your pocket.

Just saying. When I first started using the Stratosphere I wondered how long it would be before the tablet makers added external keyboards

or when PC makers would make laptops with touch screens or detachable keyboards so they could be either or.

Too bad for me I'm not an inventor. I might already have made my first billions with

I saw the first tablet and the first smartphone. Yes people like bigger screens Samsung.

But...get your smartphones in everyone's pockets and I believe PCS will soon die off completely.

Even with the advent of small netbooks you still can't put a PC in your pocket either.

Don't*think*you can...*know*you can. I can only show you the door...you're the one who has to walk through it.

The Intelligent Deboning System a one-armed knife-wielding automaton has the brains and dexterity to debone a bird in four seconds flat on par with a human butcher. 1) Queue Gutted whole chickens sit on metal cones as they travel along a conveyor belt

A computer instantly renders the images into a 3-D map of the bird. It also identifies useful markers such as the humerus

Brain (Not shown in illustration) To help the robot calculate the cutting path algorithms compare 3-D maps of each chicken to a database of dozens of different body types.

As the robots have to track this motion they are synchronized with the conveyor by means of the conveyor software.

The calculated coordinates are sent to the robot controller by the PC evaluation software which generates individual cutting data for each carcass.

If your phone is off by half a block in a city that's okay;

and your phone is off by that much? You might as well not be using it. Not only is it hard to get the kind of detail you need for indoor mapping with existing tools

The company claims they have 2. 5m accuracy using only ambient Wifi signals that are already present in buildings.

It's unclear how exactly they can use ambient Wi-fi signals but Apple must have faith in their abilities given that the larger company just paid $20 million for them. via New york Timesjapan implemented this type of technology long ago to keep track of their employees at work.

I'm a big apple fan but your title and the picture associated with it are simply hilarious.

#Blog Liveblog: Listening To Fake Coffeeshop Noises To Increase Productivitycoffitivity is a website with a ten-minute looping recording of ambient noise in a coffeeshop.

According to a paper in the Journal of Consumer Research background noise can have a positive effect on creative cognition

the website has cartoons with the word EURIKA! written on them. This is not how you spell eureka

#Apple Files For Patent On Snap-Band Watch Thingthere's been a lot of chatter about Apple creating a smartwatch--a wearable computer that syncs with a smartphone--on such publications as um this one as of late.

a wrist-mounted computer. This does not however mean that Apple will come out with a product that looks anything like this.

The patent is for a snap-band sort of bracelet with a flexible screen that wraps all the way around the device.

Flexible screens like that are a popular future-tech to work on but they're not actually that good just yet--they tend to be low-resolution brittle and quite expensive.

Im pretty sure thats a picture of those snap bands from the 80's. www. google. com/search?

if Apple can patent a rectangle (iphone shape) and a latch (slide to unlock) I guess they can patent any device that already exists.

I'm guessing that the iphone shape and latch are what's know as'Design Patents'.
