or PMS may want to pay attention to the amount of iron in their diets according to a new study.
and food cravings to fatigue and moodiness. Other research has shown that diet affects the development of PMS
or may ease the severity of its symptoms. For example diets high in calcium-rich foods have been shown to lower the risk of PMS
but little was known about the role other minerals might play in preventing the symptoms. For the study researchers reviewed three sets of food frequency questionnaires collected over a 10-year period from more than 3000 American women ages 25 to 42.
All the women were enrolled in the ongoing Nurses'Health Study II which is exploring the influence of diet and lifestyle on women's health.
Researchers compared the mineral intakes from food as well as supplements for nearly 1060 women who had been diagnosed with PMS against those of roughly 1970 women who had few if any PMS symptoms.
The scientists also considered other factors linked to PMS such as a woman's age weight pregnancy history use of oral contraceptives
It was primarily the iron found in plant foods and in supplements non-heme iron that reduced a woman's chances of developing PMS.
The heme iron coming from animal sources such as red meat and poultry did not have the same effect.
because it's easier to eat a diet rich in plant and supplement sources. For example three-quarters of a cup of fortified cereal has 18 mg of non-heme iron
But a 3-ounce serving of beef has only 2 to 3 mg of heme iron so you would need to eat a large serving of beef to meet your daily iron needs
But this effect was seen only for zinc supplements and not for food sources of the mineral.
Potassium found in foods such as sweet potatoes bananas and orange juice may increase a woman's chances of developing PMS by boosting levels of a hormone linked to water retention.
The mineral may also contribute to other physical and emotional symptoms such as bloating depression and irritability.
Because the effects of potassium on PMS need further investigation and the mineral is an important component of a healthy diet Bertone-Johnson said she would still encourage women who have PMS to consume the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for potassium or 4700
#Is Eating DNA Safe?(Op-Ed) This article was published originally atâ The Conversation. Â The publication contributed the article to Livescience'sâ Expert Voices:
Eating DNA sounds scary but it s completely safe. I do it every day. Let me explain.
While DNA is an acid it s a very weak one more like vinegar or the citric acid in lemons than a dangerous acid like sulphuric acid.
which is a sugar a bit like glucose but with fewer carbons. The oedeoxy part means the ribose is missing one oxygen atom.
It is also a good food. I am sure because nearly all the food we eat contains DNA and lots of it.
The reason is simple. Organisms are built not of continuous matter like plasticine we are made up of tiny balloons called cells.
Think of genes as different apps on a smartphone so all the smartphones that make up your liver will have one set of apps on
So whether you are a vegetarian who eats lettuce and cauliflower or an omnivore who eats steak and kidney pies you are eating cells
and each cell contains DNA which in turn contains the entire genetic information or the whole genome of each species you eat.
The only living parts that don t contain DNA are things like egg whites or filtered milk that are there for energy storage or blood juices in which our blood cells float.
DNA is pushed out of hair when it forms so hair doesn t have much if any DNA but hair roots do
If you eat a three course meal oysters for starters chicken and asparagus as a main and fruit salad for dessert you are eating lots of different DNA.
Basically DNA like proteins and complex carbohydrates gets broken down into pieces this is what digestion is all about.
but there is no clear evidence that eating DNA can harm you. So what about genetically modified organisms or GMOS?
me it is no different from eating fish for the main course and strawberries for dessert.
I don t think eating DNA or any combination of different DNAS from different species could do us harm.
To convince yourself that DNA is contained in food you can do a simple experiment at home.
and while there's no evidence that the crop is in the food supply experts say it would be safe to consume.
A lot of GM foods that Americans eat are in a highly refined form like cottonseed oil or soy lecithin.
Field tests of GM wheat are subject to strict rules to ensure that the crops don't get mixed in with the food supply said Clay Sneller an associate professor at Ohio State university who studies wheat breeding and genetics.
Could GM foods be harmful? Numerous scientific studies show that genetically modified crops are safe to eat Jaffe said.
But it is possible to create a GM food that is unsafe for instance researchers could insert a gene that allowed the plant to produce an allergen or a protein to
Currently companies that make GM foods do not have to have approved these foods before they enter the market
so that companies are required to get premarket approval of GM foods. Most companies that make GM foods have consulted voluntarily with the FDA about the safety of their products
but they are required not to do this Jaffe said.)While there has been a lot of talk about whether GM foods should be labeled labeling shouldn t be a surrogate for safety Jaffe said.
If there's any question about the safety of a crop it should not go out to the market he said.
Just as researchers have used genetics to improve food production it can also provide solutions that maintain biodiversity
#Is It Really'Gluten-Free'?'FDA Sets New Limits People with celiac disease can now trust that foods labeled gluten-free are safe for them to eat the U s. Food
and Drug Administration (FDA) says. The agency issued a final rule today (Aug 2) that requires foods with gluten-free labels to limit their gluten levels to less than 20 parts gluten per million parts of food.
The new rule also says that gluten-free foods cannot contain any wheat rye or barley or any of their crossbreeds.
If any ingredients derived from these grains are used they have to be processed to reduce their gluten to amounts less than the new limits according to a statement from the FDA.
This standard'gluten-free'definition will eliminate uncertainty about how food producers label their products
and will assure people with celiac disease that foods labeled'gluten-free'meet a clear standard established
and enforced by FDA said Michael R. Taylor deputy FDA commissioner for foods and veterinary medicine.
People with the intestinal condition celiac disease have to avoid eating foods that contain gluten proteins that occur naturally in wheat rye and barley.
Eating cakes pasta and bread made with these grains'flours can be life threatening for people with celiac disease.
The only choice for the up to 3 million Americans living with CD is to adhere strictly to a gluten-free diet said Virginia A. Cox associate commissioner of the FDA's Office of External affairs. For these people consuming gluten can damage the intestines prevent the absorption of vitamins
and minerals and lead to a host of other health problems she said. Celiac disease is a condition in
which the body's defense system reacts to gluten by attacking the lining of the small intestine
The new gluten limit is the lowest level that can be detected in foods using available tools
It keeps food safe for this population gives them the tools they need to manage their health
if you have celiac disease The new rules are an addition to FDA requirements for other food labeled as free:
Salt free or sodium free means less than 5 grams of salt per serving and items labeled sugar free should contain less than 0. 5 g of sugar per serving.
Foods labeled zero calories should have less than five calories in each serving. Manufacturers have one year to ensure their gluten-free labels are consistent with the FDA requirements.
Foods that carry labels stating they're gluten-free free of gluten without gluten and no gluten but fail to meet the set limits would be considered misbranded and subject to regulatory action by the FDA.

#Junk Food Subsidies Threaten American Health (Op-Ed) Elliott Negin is the director of news and commentary at the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS.
How Simple Dietary Changes Can Save Lives and Money and How We Get There. How?
Joe and Jane Average should be eating nine based on a 2000 calorie-a-day intake according to federal dietary guidelines.
The government's junk food bias Certainly there are other things we can do to protect our hearts.
Cutting down on fatty meats and sugary soft drinks comes to mind. Getting off our butts would help too.
But three of the four AHA-endorsed diets the Mediterranean-style diet the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) Diet
and a low-fat vegetarian diet such as those developed by Dr. Dean Ornish and Robert Pritikin recommend eating more fruits and veggies.
So what's stopping us besides the fact that junk food is addictive? According to UCS it's upside-down government policy.
Federal farm policies fork over hundreds of millions of dollars a year to subsidize commodity crops mainly corn and soybeans
which are used for biofuels livestock feed and the basic ingredients in processed food. At the same time farm policies offer few incentives for farmers to grow fruits
These perverse policies make Americans foot the bill twice once to subsidize commodity crops that wind up in junk food
and hypertension said Jeffrey O'hara an agricultural economist with UCS's Food and Environment Program and the author of the recent report.
Our federal food policy is literally making us sick and driving the economy further into debt.
Since 1995 the federal government has spent $19. 2 billion to subsidize corn sweeteners corn starch and soy oils the building blocks of junk food according to an annual report published by CALPIRG Apples to Twinkies 2013:
Comparing Federal Subsidies for Fresh Produce and Junk Food. Apples are the only fruit or vegetable that benefits from a significant federal subsidy the report found
but the $689 million apple growers received during the last 18 years is compared peanuts with commodity crop support.
The report used the high-calorie Twinkie as its emblematic junk food because 17 of its 37 ingredients including corn syrup high-fructose corn syrup vegetable shortening
and corn starch are subsidized. Based on subsidy outlays CALPIRG calculated that the federal government has spent enough for each of America's 144 million taxpayers to buy 355 Twinkies between 1995 and 2012 nearly 20 a year.
In comparison apple subsidies during the same time period would cover the cost of only nine apples per person about half an apple a year.
and vegetable crops pales in comparison with what corn soy and other commodity crops get.
O'hara's second recommendation focuses on doing a better job delivering that produce at an affordable cost to consumers especially low-income Americans who are hardest hit by cardiovascular and other diet-related diseases.
O'hara would like to see more public incentives for farmers markets supermarkets small grocery stores and distribution hubs for locally grown food which would
not only make fruits and vegetables more available but also provide a market for regional fruit and vegetable farmers.
We need to start thinking about eating fruits and vegetables as an investment in public health.
and other healthy foods and promote business and marketing opportunities for farmers and ranchers. Among other things the legislation would provide $20 million annually for farmers markets
and local and regional food enterprises to help defray the cost of processing distribution storage and marketing.
It also would provide funding for the federal food stamp program now called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program (SNAP) to enable low-income consumers to buy healthy food from local farmers.
If Congress cares about saving lives it will adopt the provisions of the Brown-Pingree bill in the upcoming farm bill.
when the foods are cooked for just the right amount of time not too quickly and not too slowly a new study from Australia suggests.
See 4 Tips for Sneaking'Health'into Your Kids'Food. The children also preferred broccoli that was steamed rather than boiled;
they didn't have a favorite cooking method for cauliflower the researchers said. Broccoli steamed for a longer period of time is more bitter
which may explain why the children didn't like it. By contrast the bitterness of cauliflower didn't change much
Based on the study results children seem to prefer a medium-firm texture which is achieved with the middle cooking time the researchers said.
Because steamed veggies retain more nutrients than their boiled counterparts and kids seem to like the way they taste there may be an advantage to steaming vegetables rather than boiling them the researchers said.
or apply to especially picky eaters the researchers said. Future research is needed also to determine
when vegetables were served as part of a meal rather than a la carte. The study conducted by researchers at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation is to be published in an upcoming issue of the journal Food Quality and Preference.
Pass it on: Kids prefer broccoli and cauliflower to be cooked for 6 to 8 minutes.
