Although popular high-protein bars shakes and other products aren't the best way to get your protein experts say.

In 2012 19 percent of new food and beverage products launched in the United states were labeled as being high-protein according to Mintel a market research company.

Proteins are essential nutrients found inside every cell in the body. They are used for growth

A 2009 to 2010 U s. food survey found that on average women eat about 70 grams of protein per day

See 3 Things You Need to Know about Eating Protein. A bar or shake might seem like an easy way to get the recommended amount of protein

but you're better off getting the nutrient from real food some experts say I never recommend protein supplements said Katherine Tallmadge the author of Diet Simple (Lifeline Press 2011).

People need to be eating real food. High-protein bars and shakes are often high in calories

(and sugar) too and don't leave people feeling full in the same way that a well-rounded meal with a variety of flavors

and nutrients does said Tallmadge. You can feel full or more satisfied with fewer calories when you eat real food she added.

Good sources of protein include meat poultry fish legumes (such as dry beans and peas) eggs milk and tofu according to the CDC.

To fuel exercise and build muscle Tallmadge recommendsyogurt which she herself eats before and after a workout.

Yogurt is a major protein source Tallmadge said. For people who want a nonperishable food to take on hikes

or outings Tallmadge recommends nuts and dried fruit. Heather Mangieri a nutrition consultant and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics agreed that ideally people should get protein from food.

But some people who have high caloric needs such as athletes may find it more convenient to get their protein

along with necessary extra calories from a high-protein product Mangieri said. Mangieri notes that our bodies typically use a maximum of 20 to 30 grams of protein from a single meal.

Beyond that any additionalâ protein in a meal or bar won't confer an extra tissue-repair

or musclebuilding benefit Mangieri said. So it is important to space out protein consumption throughout the day consuming about equal portions at each meal.

For instance if you eat three meals a day you could consume about a third of your protein at breakfast a third at lunch and a third at dinner.

Pass it on: It's best to get protein from real food rather than from bars shakes or other supplements.

The market for olive oil has grown rapidly in recent years as food scientists have touted the product's health benefits.

and it's an important component of the Mediterranean diet frequently cited as one of the most healthful ways of eating.

#Should You Switch to a Mediterranean Diet? A rigorous study released earlier this week showed thata Mediterranean diet lowered the risk of heart attack and stroke in people in Spain.

But do these findings mean you should revamp your diet? Experts say the Mediterranean diet is indeed one of the healthiest diets on the planet said Katherine Tallmadge a dietitian and the author of Diet Simple (Lifeline Press 2011.

But if you want to switch you should first know exactly what eating a Mediterranean diet really means.

You don t just pour olive oil all over your dishes and think you're eating the Mediterranean diet Tallmadge said.

But even people in the Mediterranean are moving away from this traditional diet and adding more cheese

and animal fat products to their meal plan she said. The main sources of fat in the traditional Mediterranean dietdiet come from olive oil nuts

and fish and these foods are eaten in moderation said Heather Mangieri a nutrition consultant and spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association.

Because Americans today eat a relatively poor diet nutrition-wise even just incorporating a few aspects of the Mediterranean diet into their current way of eating would be a massive improvement over

That's because these foods actually contain alpha linolenic-acid acid a compound our bodies convert to omega-3 fatty acids.

The traditional Mediterranean diet is one of the healthiest diets on the planet experts say.

#Six Science-Based Strategies to Beat Holiday Bloat (Op-Ed) Katherine Tallmadge M. A r. D. is registered a dietitian noted motivational and wellness speaker author of Diet Simple:

195 Mental Tricks Substitutions Habits & Inspirations (Lifeline Press 2011) and a frequent national commentator on nutrition topics.

They also mean many opportunities for socializing overeating and drinking. Remember the holidays are only three days not every day between Thanksgiving and New Years!

When there are three pies on the holiday table pumpkin apple and pecan. Won't you have a slice of each?

What if there were only one type of pie say apple? Wouldn't you just have one slice?

so that we would get enough nutrients to survive. But today because we are exposed to a variety of fattening foods especially at restaurants buffets

or parties variety is a significant factor contributing to overeating and the obesity epidemic. Bottom line:

Serve a variety of healthy foods to yourself and your family have them accessible ready-to-eat.

Would you prefer a bowl of sliced apples or a fruit salad with a variety of fruits?

Why do people love salad bars so much? Because there is a beautiful array of colors flavors textures and shapes from

Diet Simple'sâ menu plans are filled with variety to help you stay on your plan

As long as a volume of food is high people can feel full with fewer calories.

In one study researchers varied the amount of water in a food eaten as a first course

and found subjects who ate soup before a meal consumed 26 percent fewer calories at the main course.

In another study the researchers served salads before a main course and found people ate about 100 calories fewer at the following meal.

A large food volume caused by water incorporated into the food as in vegetables fruits

and soups even without added calories improves your feelings of fullness in a variety of ways.

Second visually seeing a large volume of food can increase your ability to feel satisfied by it.

And finally the larger a meal and the longer a meal goes on the more you lose interest in completing it.

Water in food keeps calories low and has the largest influence on how much you eat.

The studies show eating a high-water-content low-calorie first course enhances satiety and reduces calorie intake at the next course.

Bottom line: Â If you eat alow-calorieâ soupâ or salad before every meal you could save 200 calories daily

and lose 20 pounds in a year all with this simple change alone. Diet Simple andâ Diet Simple Farm to Tableâ both have a wide variety of family-friendly soup

and salad recipes that will fill you up without the calories. You can also find out how simple sumptuous soups can speed up your weight loss in this article.

3. Control serving size. Â Simply the amount of food you are served will affect how full you feel

and how much you eat. When people are served varying amounts of the same food a smaller portion satisfies as much as a large one.

But when served larger amounts at the outset people eat more without realizing it sometimes 300 to 800 more calories.

If the effect persists beyond two days those extra calories added daily over the course of a year would pack on 30 to 80 pounds in one year.

Why? Â Humans findâ portion size difficult to judge and don't adjust our intake. Also people tend to eat in units.

if it's a tasty high calorie food. So when served larger portions we adjust our level of satiety to accommodate greater calorie intakes.

Control the food that is put in front of you. When good-tasting lower-calorie foods or portion-controlled meals are available we will eat those and feel just as satisfied.

If that saves 300 calories at lunch and dinner that's 60 pounds lost in one year.

Diet Simpleâ andâ Diet Simple Farm to Tableâ are filled with wonderful ideas and recipes to help you stay on your program.

 4. Food pushers.  To be fair food pushers as I call them aren't necessarily bad people.

Your mom your spouse your friends they just want to please you. They are people who think they have your best interests at heart.

My clients and I have tried various tactics to deal with food pushers through the years most of them utter failures.

I've tried explaining that I wasn't hungry. I even went through a phase of telling people

And I learned that the worst thing you can say to a food pusher isâ No thanks I'm on a diet orâ Thanks

First your excuse is giving the food pusher a double signal that you really want it

Second it might also sound insulting implying that the food isn't good enough for your refined tastes.

All of these things challenge the food pusher to seduce you. Bottom line: Â I finally began to make headway when

Save at least 200 calories per day by saying No thank you to your food pusher and lose 20 pounds in one year!

There are many ideas for handling food pushers inâ Diet Simple. Â 5. Show control with sweets.

Humans have been eating naturally sweet foods such as breast milk and fruit for millions of years.

Such foods contain life-sustaining nutrients and a love for those foods helped keep us alive.

Also during evolution an attraction to scarce calorie-dense foods such as sweets and fats improved our chances for survival.

Bottom line: Â Because we have a natural urge for sweets include something naturally sweet at every meal such as fruit (remember the importance of variety?.

My clients who try this find their cravings for high-calorie super-sweet foods reduce.

Another strategy would be to go ahead and eat a tiny sweet each day say 10 percent of your daily calories.

Or splurge once a week on a large dessert. Eat a 150 calorie treat instead of a 300 calorie treat daily

Inâ Diet Simple there are many ideas for having your sweets and eating them too! Â (Learn more about sweets the science behind our sweet cravings

Inâ Diet Simple there are many creative ways to increase your physical activity to fit your unique needs for weight loss

and eat as many candies as they can on their trick-or-treat adventure. Although what happens during this once-a-year occasion may not have major consequences on children's health

But there are sneaky steps parents can take to make Halloween a healthier day for kids without resorting to replacing all the candy with nuts and fruits.

For example parents might host craft parties where kids can use the candy to make things.

I'm a big fan of making candy haunted houses said Heather Mangieri a nutrition consultant and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Use the different shapes sizes and colors of the candy to see who can build a bigger haunted house.

and a few days after houses are built the candy gets tossed. That said there's no need to make Halloween a sugar-free day.

Candy is part of a Halloween tradition and kids can enjoy the fun and candy Mangieri said.

Just don't let that one-day holiday turn into a three-week celebration. Parents can discard extra candy

or keep it in the freezer and out of sight. Children can send candies they have gathered to Operation Gratitude to be shipped to U S. soldiers overseas Mangieri said.

In any case setting family guidelines before Halloween for how much candy is reasonable to eat in one day and

what to do with the leftovers may help avoid a candy overdose said Vandana Sheth a registered dietitian based in Los angeles and a spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

I believe that Halloween is the perfect time to reiterate the importance of moderation. Spooky fruits While children should be allowed to enjoy their earned candy on Halloween parents should also use the opportunity to introduce healthier snacks to kids by using attractive presentation.

Kids may like a banana but they would love a spooky banana ghost. Be creative and try to incorporate a variety of healthy Halloween-themed snacks

Using creative decorations almost any food can be turned into a spider witch or vampire. For frozen treats such as mini ice pops or frozen yogurt using a cooler filled with dry ice can give a spooky smoky effect enticing kids to choose the treats.

Halloween's Top 10 Scary Creatures Mangieri suggested chocolate-covered strawberry ghosts orâ Jack-o'lantern fruit cupsâ for party treats.

Both Mangieri and Sheth suggested that parents make sure children eat a meal before going trick

When children enjoy a healthy and balanced meal then they will eat fewer pieces of candy afterward.

Allowing kids to skip dinner is asking for candy calorie overload Mangieri said. Top treats Nutritionists suggest choosing smaller fun size candies

Parents should consider also including some more wholesome treats in candy collections prepared forâ trick-or-treaters.

Whole-grain crackers sugar-free gum mini rice cereal treat bars cereal bars made with real fruit mini 100-percent fruit-juice boxes

and low-fat pudding cups are among healthier options for treats Sheth said. 10 Ways to Promote Kids'Healthy Eating Habits Mangieri suggested including crunchy snacks such as mini pretzel packs

or bags of 100-calorie popcorn that can be packed as part of a school lunch. Her other favorite treat is lollipops.

Lollipops keep kids'mouths occupied which means less opportunity to shovel in endless amounts of sugar she said.

Don't forget toys If given a choice children may prefer toys over candy. Having a couple of toys

and nonfood items in your basket is especially important and considerate for kids with food allergies Sheth said.

Halloween-themed notebooks bouncy balls coloring pencils and small containers of modeling clay could be good nonfood treats.

We forget how much kids love toys and trinkets Mangieri said. Stickers mini packs of playing cards and pencils or Halloween-themed erasers are all items that kids can enjoy weeks after Halloween night is over.

#Some Weight Loss Supplements Contain Amphetamine-Like Compound Some popular weight-loss supplements contain a synthetic compound that is chemically similar to the drug amphetamine according to a new study by researchers at the Food and Drug Administration.

But 9 of the 21 dietary supplements tested were found to have an unnatural compound called beta-methylphenethylamine

At least six products sold at the nutrition retailer GNC contain Acacia rigidula according to a search of the company's online store.

#Southern Diet May Increase Stroke Risk No matter where you live eating lots of Southern-style foods may increase your risk of stroke a new study suggests.

The study which surveyed people all over the United states about their eating habits found that people who dined on Southern-style foods about six times a week were 41 percent more likely to have a stroke over a four-year-period than people who ate Southern-style

foods just once a month. Examples of Southern-style foods included fried chicken fried fish fried potatoes bacon ham liver and gizzards and sugar-sweetened beverages such as sweet tea.

By contrast people in the study who ate a diet high in fruits vegetables legumes

Not surprisingly the preference for Southern-style cuisine was most common in the South: about two-thirds of those who ate the most Southern-style foods lived in the Southeast.

The study only found an association and not a cause-effect link. But the results agree with previous research findings which found that people who live in the South are 20 percent more likely to die from a stroke than people who live elsewhere in the country.

African-americans are five times more likely to eat Southern-style foods than whites and they also have a higher risk of stroke.

When one considers factors that increase cardiovascular disease risk the Southern diet poses a triple threat said study researcher Suzanne Judd Ph d. a nutritional epidemiologist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Fried foods are high in fat and salt which can raise cholesterol levels and blood pressure respectively.

And regularly downing sugar-sweetened beverages can increase the risk of Type 2 diabetes another risk factor for cardiovascular disease Judd said.

They also answered questions about the types of foods they ate. Health-care providers should make sure they ask their patients about the foods they commonly eat

and educate them about the importance of eating a healthy diet Judd said. Pass it on:

Eating lots of Southern-style cuisine including fried foods and sugar-sweetened beverages is linked to an increased risk of stroke.

#Sparkling wines from Sussex? Climate Change Swirls Wine Production (Op-Ed) Antonio Busalacchi directs the University of Maryland Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center and chairs the World Climate Research

Programme's Joint Scientific Committee and the National Research Council board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate.

Busalacchi Is advanced an Sommelier and Certified Wine Educator and operates wine and vineyard consulting firm Vinoveritas LLC.

He contributed this article to Livescience's Expert Voices: Op-Ed & Insights. In the not too distant future your favorite style of French wine may not come from its namesake region or even from France at all.

Climate change is altering growing conditions in wine-producing regions and in coming decades it will change the wines produced in these regions in some cases shifting northward the growth of grape varieties long associated with regions further south.

Climate change will produce winners and losers among wine-growing regions and for every region it will result in changes to the alcohol acid sugar tannins

and color contained in each wine. My research assistant Eric Hackert and I have analyzed climate change impacts on two dozen of the world's major wine-producing regions across both the Old

and New worlds providing snapshots of what conditions will be like at the middle and end of this century.

For example several Champagne houses already are looking at land in Sussex and Kent in southern England as potential sites for new vineyards because as climate warms the region those areas are becoming more hospitable to quality grape growing.

The soil type in the region (note the white cliffs of Dover) is similar to the chalky substrate of Champagne

and the cost of land is 30 times less than the premium to be paid per hectare in France.

In general vineyards in higher latitudes at higher altitudes or surrounded by ocean will benefit from climate change.

These regions will experience more consistent growing seasons and a greater number of favorable growing days.

Our research suggests Bordeaux and several other regions will suffer compressed growing seasons that yield unbalanced low-acid wines that lack complexity.

South africa and South australia likely will see declines in wine production due to severe droughts. Extreme events such as heat waves that shut down photosynthesis

and hail storms that can ruin a chateau's annual production in a matter of minutes will become more commonplace.

wines will lose their traditional character. Taken to an extreme a wine from the Left bank of Bordeaux may move away from the classic aromas of cedar cigar box blackcurrants and green pepper and more toward the full rich spicy-peppery profile of a Chã¢teauneuf-du-Pape

from the Southern Rhone. Given that most grapevines produce fruit for 25 to 50 years grape growers

and wine makers must consider the long term when determining what to plant where to plant and how to manage their vineyards.

In the Old world traditions may need to change with the times as appellation regulations restrict irrigation wine-making practices

Adaptations in grape growing and wine making represent only a few of the many adjustments the world will have to make as a result of the warming planet.

Beverages Pack Calorie Punch (Op-Ed) Katherine Tallmadge M. A r. D. is registered a dietitian author of Diet Simple:

195 Mental Tricks Substitutions Habits & Inspirations (Lifeline Press 2011) and a frequent national commentator on nutrition topics.

Juicing is all the rage these days with juice cleanses celebrity-sponsored juicers and Starbucks opening its first juice bar.

I've been drinking orange juice every morning of my life. You'd think I'd be sick of it by now.

But every morning I look forward to my sunshine in a glassand it never disappoints especially

But I limit my juice to four ounces in the morning because while it packs a nutritional punch it also puts on pounds and fast!

Here's an example of how. One of my clients Caroline was successfully losing weight

Her food intake was stellar. She was even a little more physically active than usual. Not until we reviewed her food diary thoroughly did we discover the culprit was liquid calories

and they added up in a way that surprised her. In her case as is the case with many people that extra glass of wine

or mixer or juice as a snack here and there can add up in ways we don't expect.

Liquid calories in just about any form alcohol juice or soda are stealth calories. They come in undetected under the radar screen

but have an impact that can be enormous. Scientific evidence confirms that although such liquids count as calories the body doesn't detect them the same way as it would detect solid food.

When people eat calories in the form of solid food they naturally compensate by reducing the rest of their food intake.

But when people ingest liquid calories they don't compensate for them by eating fewer calories studies show.

and don't elicit compensatory dietary responses said Richard Mattes M p h R. D. a professor of foods and nutrition at Purdue University.

When drinking fluid calories people often end up eating more calories overall. This may help explain the results of a study by researchers from Harvard university

The researchers behind that study found that women who increased their intake of sugar-sweetened beverages such as sodas

or fruit punch from one per week to one or more per day added 358 calories daily and gained significant weight.

Earlier studies demonstrated that consumption of sugar-sweetened soft drinks increased the likelihood of obesity in children

versus a solid may generate different signals less time and involvement with food and reduced psychological satisfaction.

Emerging research is finding the hunger hormone ghrelin may play a key physiological role in the weight gain associated with juices and other drinks.

and their varying effects on ghrelin other researchers have found that drinking fluids may produce varying degrees of satiety depending on

Research has established fairly well that alcoholic beverages and sugary liquids especially sodas and fruit drinks aren't completely registered

or compensated for by the body and simply add extra calories. Some beverages cross over the line into being a food says Barbara Rolls professor of nutritional sciences at Pennsylvania State university.

She conducted studies that found people felt more satiated and consumed fewer calories when they had based milk drinks at the beginning of a meal.

The high protein levels in addition to cognitive beliefs about milk being a food may make it more satiating.

Also fluids with food in them such as soups are very satiating. But most caloric fluids Americans consume are not satiating.

When you consider that an appropriately sized meal is anywhere from 400 to 700 calories

and one Big Gulp is more than 300 calories you understand the scope of the problem!

One glass of wine contains at least 100 calories and one mixed drink can set you back 300 calories or more.

Double or triple these numbers at any given party tack on the calories in your meals

and you can understand how weight gain is the inevitable result. Those of my clients who became aware of liquid calories have achieved impressive results.

Levey wrote about the importance of cutting out his daily lemonade in his successful weight-loss effort.

A friend of mine Linda slowly phased out her daily soda by adding more and more ice to it each week until she was only drinking water.

The one liquid that's important to keep drinking is water. In the wintertime I love sipping water as teas throughout the day.

In the summer it's seltzer with a twist of lemon or lime and in moderation the occasional diet soda.

Of course if people are mindful of their calorie intake a moderate daily dose of wine

or other caloric beverage won't hurt once in a while. The key is mindfulness and moderation. Katherine discussed juicing on National Public Radio's Kojo Nnamdi Show on WAMU 88.5 FM.

Tallmadge's most recent Op-Ed was 13 Tips for Staying Hydrated in the Summer Heatâ
