Health Benefits, Risks & Nutrition Facts Spiny on the outside sweet on the inside pineapples are one fantastic fruit.

Not surprisingly they do contain sugar with 16 grams per cup. Pineapples are members of the bromeliad family and one of the few bromeliads to produce edible fruit.

Canned pineapple is much higher in calories (198 per cup) and sugars due to its syrup.

If you do opt for canned pineapple try to get it with no added sugar or look for a variety that is canned in fruit juice instead of syrup.

Here are the nutrition facts for pineapple according to the U s. Food and Drug Administration which regulates food labeling through the National Labeling and Education Act:

whose bones are becoming brittle with age. Digestion Like many other fruits and vegetables pineapple contains dietary fiber

Those with allergies may want to consider incorporating pineapple into their diets more regularly to reduce sinus mucus long term.

This is because bromelain also has meat-tenderizing properties. The condition should cease within a few hours

Eating unripe pineapple or drinking unripe pineapple juice is dangerous. In this state it is toxic to humans

and will hunt for food at night and sleep during the day. Young wolves are called pups.

Young pups start off drinking milk from their mother but around five to 10 weeks they will start eating food regurgitated from adult pack members.

Wolves are voracious eaters. They can eat up to 20 pounds (9 kg) of food during one meal.

Since they are carnivores their meals consist of meat that they hunted. Gray wolves usually eat large prey such as moose goats sheep and deer.

Normally the pack of wolves will find the weakest or sickest animal in a herd circle it

Red wolves eat smaller prey such as rodents insects and rabbits. They aren't afraid of going outside their carnivorous diet

and will eat berries on occasion too. Class: Mammalia (Mammals) Order: Carnivora Family: Canidae Genus: Canis Species:

and other foods may improve the function of blood vessels in people with cardiovascular disease according to a new study

but experts suggest that it is best to stick with eating real fruits and vegetables for now.

It reinforces the need for a healthy diet in people at risk from heart disease and stroke.

This would need much larger trials to investigate outcomes more carefully Cheriyan said. 7 Ways to Lower Your Risk of Heart disease Previous research has shown that cardiovascular disease is less common in countries where most people follow the so-called Mediterranean diet

It is a nice attempt to show how nutrition can improve blood-vessel function said Dr. Monica Aggarwal a cardiologist and a member of the Heart Center at Mercy Medical center in Baltimore.

Nearly a third of all the food produced in the world is lost or wasted according to the UN s World Resources Institute.

If we convert this mass into calories it constitutes nearly a quarter of all food produced

It is a sad irony that we waste so much food especially fruit and vegetables but still fail to feed the world s ever increasing population.

Clearly our ability to produce larger quantities of fruit and vegetables is not the only guarantee for global food security.

We need to start minimising the amount of food that is produced and then lost. Loss happens when food is spilt in transit

or spoilt from heavy bruising or wilting. It is unplanned the result of an agricultural process gone wrong or technical limitations in storage infrastructure packaging or marketing.

Good food is wasted also when it is thrown simply away before or after it spoils. A key way to minimise the amount of food lost is through postharvest technology

which can help make food last longer without losing nutrients. Once developed it needs to be integrated into the global supply chain of food production.

We need to optimise the food we already produce especially in developing countries. This can be done by significantly improving the way food is handled after harvesting particularly to make the process more hygienic.

We should make sure postharvest techniques are environmentally friendly and of course nontoxic to humans when applied to food.

The use of natural biodegradable products as an alternative to synthetic chemicals has shown remarkable improvements in maintaining fruit quality

and extending shelf life. These natural products are nontoxic to humans and safe. Chitosan for example is a natural product obtained from crustacean shells.

It has been shown to significantly maintain papaya fruit when applied to it. In combination with Gum arabic (hardened sap obtained from the acacia tree) it can also delay the ripening of bananas.

Cinnamon oil is another natural product that has been shown to delay postharvest rotting in bananas and extending their storage life for up to 28 days.

The way that fresh food is packaged is crucial to how long it can last. Synthetic chemicals are used currently to control postharvest diseases

This includes packing food in containers that modify the atmosphere to prevent decay hot water treatment

Once proper postharvest technologies are used efficiently food losses can be minimised and the problem of food insecurity alleviated.

Hopefully too we can develop better ways of reducing the huge amount of food loss that takes place

and focus on getting food to those who need it. Asgar Ali receives funding from the Ministry of Agriculture Malaysia.

Doc Reviews Food Words Used in Medicine From symptoms such as watermelon stomach to blueberry muffin rash food imagery has helped long doctors describe features of diseases and health conditions.

References to food items although sometimes stomach turning reinforce doctors'understanding of diseases and have enriched the medical lexicon said Dr. Ritu Lakhtakia head of the department of Pathology at Sultan Qaboos University in Oman.

and researchers catching up on their meals in clinical side rooms or operating theatre offices or with an inevitably cold platter eaten with eyes glued to a microscope Lakhtakia wrote today (July 9) in the journal Medical Humanities.

and will continue to be a lively learning inducement for generations of budding physicians she said. 7 Medical Myths Even Doctors Believe From anchovy sauce to spaghetti and meatballs The food references in medicine range from beverages and fruits to dairy products

and even whole dishes. In a gastronomic tour of medical conditions Lakhtakia highlights some of the well-known instances.

For example anchovy sauce is used to describe the pus from a liver abscess and sago spleen indicates protein (amyloid) deposits

The beer belly is a well-known example of a reference to a beverage Lakhtakia said. Dairy products also feature prominently in medical terms including milk patches

References to various types of cheese help doctors identify certain bacterial infections whereas egg shell crackling denotes the grating sound that indicates of a type of bone tumor that thins the bone surface as it expands.

The gastronomic analogies in medicine also draw on breakfast foods: A croissant in a cell nucleus cues doctors to diagnose benign growths on peripheral nerves

and blueberry muffin rash is a sign of congenital rubella while the shape of a red blood cell is referred to as doughnut.

Sometimes references include an entire dish for example a skin condition called tinea versicolor is characteristic by its spaghetti and meatball appearance.

With the names of fruits vegetables and legumes doctors can identify the shape of organs or the size of tumors.

For example the kidneys have a beanlike shape; people can have body shapes similar to an apple

or a pear and tumors can be walnut-size or orange-size. Fruits also come in handy in identifying certain diseases:

Strawberry cervix describes the inflamed red appearance of the neck of the uterus in women with a parasite infection called trichomoniasis

Reminiscent of imagination cultures and creativity These audacious and colorful references can be attributed to the imagination of the scientists who came up with them as well as to those scientists'regional food preferences Lakhtakia said.

The majority of the references mention European foods but American foods have been added later and there are a few examples of more-Eastern food items as well.

Besides their usefulness in teaching medicine such food references could stimulate epicurean enlightenment in medical students

and teach them about this aspect of global culture and gastronomical differences Lakhtakia said. However using allusions to food

when referring to illness also calls for strong stomachs Lakhtakia said. It is a wonder that in the midst of the smells

and sights of human affliction a physician has the stomach to think of food at all she wrote.

#In Massive Shift, Nestlã Takes on Animal Cruelty (Op-Ed) Matthew Prescott food policy director for The Humane Society of the United states contributed this article to Live Science's Expert Voices:

In late August Nestlã the world's largest food company rocked animal agribusiness when it teamed up with humane organizations to announce groundbreaking reforms in the way chickens pigs cows

and other animals in its global supply chain will be treated. The company has a market capitalization of nearly a quarter-trillion dollars

and breeding chickens to grow too heavy too fast which leads to crippling injuries; mutilating animals by cutting their tails horns and genitals off without pain relief;

and locking egg-laying hens veal calves and mother pigs in tiny cages for their entire lives.

and the health of animals raised for food and firmly believe that robust farm animal health

and welfare standards can have both a direct and an indirect impact on food quality and safety.

This change follows more than a decade of food companies announcing policy-after-policy to improve the way their suppliers treat animals.

Burger king for example announced in 2012 a policy to convert its egg supply in the United states to 100-percent cage-free;

Unilever is doing the same for its supply chain worldwide. And more than 60 other companies are working to move their pork suppliers away from gestation crates for breeding sows.

But Nestlã's policy is perhaps the most comprehensive among the major global food producers and purveyors as it outlines an entire menu of changes that its suppliers must embrace

if they want to remain in the Nestlã system. While the food industry is making great strides in supporting humane changes some agribusiness leaders still resist improvements.

All forms of restraint the Animal Industry Foundation (now the Animal Agriculture Alliance) has insisted are designed for the welfare of the animal as well as the efficiency of production.

Or even Chickens prefer to be claimed in cages Ken Klippen an egg industry spokesperson. But science reveals a different story.

Sows routinely confined in gestation crates display behavioral abnormalities such as bar-biting and aggression caused by the environmental deficiencies and restricted feeding regimens.

When the Prairie Swine Center a prestigious pork-industry research firm compared animal housing systems that confine pigs in gestation crates with group housing

For a food giant like Nestlã to recognize this and demand change represents an important step toward a more humane world.

Health Benefits, Risks & Nutrition Facts Potatoes are the No. 1 vegetable crop in the United states and the fourth most consumed crop in the world behind rice wheat and corn according to the U s. Department of agriculture.

Potatoes are thought often of as a comfort food richly mashed with butter and sour cream or crisply fried in vegetable oil.

But when prepared in these ways they can lead to weight gain diabetes and heart disease according to the Harvard School of Public health.

However when prepared the right way without butter cheese or sour cream for example these vegetables are somewhat nutritious.

Potatoes are low calorie with a medium-sized baked potato containing only about 110 calories.

Here are the nutrition facts for a potato according to the U s. Food and Drug Administration

which regulates food labeling through the National Labeling and Education Act: Nutrition Facts Serving size:

1 medium (5. 3 oz/148 g) Calories 110 Calories from Fat 0*Percent Daily Values(%DV) are based on a 2000 calorie diet.

Potassium is a mineral that helps lower blood pressure according to the U s. Food and Drug Administration.

Scientists at the Institute for Food Research have discovered that potatoes contain chemicals called kukoamines which are associated with lowering blood pressure.

This means that eating potatoes may help with depression stress and even perhaps attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD.

A 1995 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that modest increases in glucose could help enhance learning and memory.

and potatoes are full of this nutrient with about 45 percent of the daily recommended intake per medium baked potato according to the Washington state Potato Commission.

Inflammation Some people think potatoes and other members of the nightshade family such as eggplants tomatoes and peppers trigger arthritis flares.

The organization suggests that people with arthritis try cutting nightshade vegetables from their diets for two weeks to see

For example a 2011 study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that potatoes may reduce inflammation.

These nutrients are all present in potatoes. Potatoes are fat free but they are also starchy carbohydrates with little protein.

That is they cause blood sugar and insulin to surge and then dip. This effect can make people feel hungry again soon after eating

which may lead to overeating. The rapid rise in blood sugar can also lead to increased insulin production.

when planning meals people should remember potatoes'carb content. Potatoes should take the place of a grain on the plate.

Use it as a carb rather than as your only vegetable she said. Even when prepared in a healthy way potatoes can present health problems to individuals with obesity or diabetes.

Jarzabkowski likened the vegetables in this way to white bread. The Harvard School of Public health tracked the diet

and lifestyle of 120000 men and women for about 20 years and found that people who increased their consumption of French fries

You can probably guess that smothering your potato in sour cream and bacon isn't the healthiest way to enjoy it but

what is? Which is baked more nutritious boiled or steamed potatoes? Jarzabkowski emphasized the importance of preparation in potato consumption.

or microwaving a potato causes the lowest amount of nutrients to be lost she said. The next-healthiest way to cook a potato is through steaming which causes less nutrient loss than boiling.

Cooking a peeled potato in this way results in significant nutrient loss as the water-soluble nutrients leach out into the water.

In a potato those water-soluble nutrients include B-complex vitamins Vitamin c potassium and calcium. As much as 80 percent of a potato's Vitamin c may go down the drain

however you'll still get some of the nutrients. However you cook a potato try to eat the skin.

Ounce for ounce the skin contains more nutrients including the majority of the vegetable's fiber than the rest of the potato Jarzabkowski said.

Like tomatoes eggplants and peppers potatoes are members of the nightshade family. They are not root vegetables;

which functions to provide food to the leafy part of the plant. The eyes of potatoes are buds

which will sprout into branches if left alone. The word potato comes from the Spanish patata.

It is a myth that the word is an acronym for the Society for the Prevention of an Unwholesome Diet a supposed activist group that wanted to keep the potato out of Britain in the 19th century.

Potatoes were used traditionally to make vodka although today most vodka is produced using fermented grains such as corn wheat or rye.

According to Guinness World records the largest potato grown was 7 lbs. 1 ounce (3. 2 kg.

The Inca in Peru were the first to cultivate potatoes growing the vegetables around 8000 B c. to 5000 B c. In 1536 Spanish Conquistadors conquered Peru

It took nearly four decades for the potato to spread to the rest of Europe.

For many years people thought that eating potatoes would cause leprosy. Potatoes arrived in The british colonies in 1621

The first permanent potato patches in North america were established in 1719 most likely near Londonderry New hampshire by Scotch-Irish immigrants.

He created a feast with only potato dishes which he realized was possible when he was fed only potatoes

When the king arrived late for dinner Collinet plunged already-fried potatoes into extremely hot oil to reheat them.

and when the blight reached Ireland the residents'main staple food disappeared. Many poverty-stricken families struggled to survive.

Over the course of the famine almost 1 million people died from starvation or disease.

They decompose dead organic matter through a process called mineralisation releasing mineral nutrients that plants absorb through their roots allowing the forest to grow.

when a rainforest is converted to a pasture something that is happening at an alarming rate in many parts of the Amazon.

This may have major implication on how nutrients are cycled in the new ecosystem. Any changes to the nitrogen cycle are likely to affect the carbon cycle

Our examination revealed that approximately 50%of Amazon s abandoned pastures are going through secondary forest formation.

Also using our results we can start devising new methods to aid the recovery of disturbed ecosystems imagine a cocktail of microbes added for ecosystem restoration.

Gardeners know plants require the right combination of soil nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus to thrive.

Long ago the molten rock that formed the Sierra nevada granite was the feeder system for a massive volcanic mountain chain similar to the Andes in South america.

The plutons have been brought to the surface by millions of years of erosion along with uplift from tectonic forces at the boundary between the North american and Pacific plates.

The new study suggests the trees will also march upward according to where they find the best food.

Hamsters will also store food in their burrows. Living underground keeps wild hamsters cool in hot climates.

If there isn't enough food stored hamsters will wait to hibernate until their surplus is to their liking.

A captive hamster's diet should be at least 16 percent protein and 5 percent fat according to Canadian Federation of Humane Societies.

They have pouches in their cheeks that they stuff with food. Then they will carry their hoard back to their colony so they can eat it later.

Pet hamsters will often store food under their cage bedding. Male and female hamsters waste no time when mating with one another.

#Skipping Red Meat May Lower Breast cancer Risk Women who eat more poultry fish nuts and legumes and less red meat when they are young adults might have lower risk of developing breast cancer later in life according to a new study.

The researchers looked at nearly 89000 women ages 26 to 45 and followed them for 20 years to look at links between the women's diet as they reported it in 1991 and their risk of breast cancer.

By the end of the study period 2830 women had been diagnosed with breast cancer. The women who reported the highest consumption of red meat about 1. 6 servings daily had a 22 percent higher risk of breast cancer compared with women who ate the least red meat

or about 0. 2 servings daily according to the findings published today (June 10) in the journal BMJ.

Each serving per day increase in red meat was associated with a 13 percent increase in risk of breast cancer the researchers wrote in their paper.

but because breast cancer is a relatively common cancer the absolute number of excess cases attributable to red meat intake would be substantial

and hence a public health concern they wrote. 6 Foods That May Affect Breast cancer Risk The results also showed that eating more poultry in early adulthood was associated with a lower risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women.

The researchers estimated that replacing one daily serving of red meat with a serving of other protein-rich foods may reduce risk of breast cancer by 14 percent.

Red meat alternatives include legumes nuts poultry and fish. Previous studies have linked red meat to several cancers particularly colon cancer.

Although it's not clear how red meat may increase the risk of cancer researchers are investigating several possible mechanisms.

For example cooking meat at high temperatures can produce cancer-causing chemicals. Meat proteins may also promote tumors'growth by triggering growth hormones

which could explain the link. Studies have produced mixed results on the link between red meat and breast cancer.

However most previous studies focused on people's diets during midlife and later whereas it is possible that diet during early adulthood has greater effects on the development of breast cancer the researchers said.

In the study red meat included both unprocessed and processed meat products. Poultry included chicken and turkey and fish included tuna salmon mackerel and sardines.

The results held when the researchers accounted for other factors that could affect the risk of breast cancer such as age weight race family history of breast cancer history of benign breast disease smoking habits and oral contraceptive use.

The researchers examined whether the link between red meat and breast cancer risk would change when levels of other risk factors changed.

They found that only oral contraceptives seemed to further increase the risk associated with red meat. For each daily serving of red meat the risk of breast cancer was 54 percent higher among women who currently used oral contraceptives

and 11 percent higher in women who were former users of the contraceptives. The researchers detailed the findings today (June 10) in the journal BMJ.

and to accept a carbon source of corn-based sugar. The microorganisms feed on the plant-derived sugars and produce PHA.

The PHA is separated then from the bacteria and made into pellets that can be molded into plastic products.

and it competes with the food supply. Mango Materials'process uses bacteria grown in fermenters to transform methane and oxygen along with added nutrients (to supply excess carbon) into PHA.

Eventually the PHA-rich bacteria now literally swollen with PHA granules are removed from the fermenters

whereas Mango Materials uses waste methane which is considerably less expensive than sugar. By using methane gas as the feedstock we can significantly drive down costs of production Morse says.

#Did'Deadly'Spider Eggs Really Hitch a Ride on Imported Bananas? It's enough to make you do a double take the next time you unpack your groceries!

A recent British news report claimed that imported bananas could play host to a certain species of venomous spiders.

A woman in Essex England recently discovered that a bunch of bananas delivered to her home by a local grocer was infested with spider eggs.

and reportedly identified the eggs as those belonging to the immense and deadly Brazilian wandering spider according to MSN New zealand.

It's unlikely that the woman's bananas were infested truly with deadly spider eggs said Richard Vetter a retired research associate of entomology at the University of California Riverside.

(if there even was had a spider laid the enigmatic eggs. Egg sacks are much harder to identify than spiders.

To identify them you need familiarity with the spider first then the egg sack Vetter said.

It's unlikely that British exterminators would be intimately familiar with the egg sacks of spiders from South and Central america he added.

However it is possible that the eggs in question belonged to an arachnid Vetter said. There are several genera of spider that sometimes survive the long trip from banana-producing nations such as Brazil Mexico Nicaragua and Costa rica to other parts of the world.

Among them are Phoneutria and Cupiennius two types of spiders that are commonly known as wandering spiders.

Wandering spiders are named for their tendency to wander around looking for food instead of spinning a web.

And because of their preference for these fruit trees species of both genera at times wind up in grocery stores

or any other banana-producing nation then those eggs didn't belong to one of the deadly species of Brazilian wandering spiders he added.
