#Airbus patents plane that could fly from New york to London in 1 hour A rocket-plane that could fly from Vancouver to Tokyo in three hours instead of 10 has been patented by Airbus. The U s. patent for an"ultra-rapid air vehicle

Airbus said the plane would be targeted mainly at business travel and VIP passengers"who require transcontinental return journeys within one day,

"and at the military. The document states that the supersonic plane could carry 20 passengers

or two to three tonnes and reach up to 4. 5 times the speed of sound (Mach 4. 5) around 5 500 kilometres per hour.

That would allow it to fly about 9, 000 kilometres from Paris to San francisco (currently an 11-hour flight) or Tokyo to Los angeles (currently a 10-hour flight) in three hours,

the plane could cover the 5, 600-kilometre distance between New york and London, normally a seven to eight hour flight, in an hour.

However, that doesn't take into account that the plane wouldn't be at its top speed for the entire duration of the flight.

The plane would achieve its extreme speed with a combination of three sets of engines turbojets for taxiing, takeoff and landing;

The turbojets and rocket motor fold into the body of plane when not in use and the plane also has adjustable fins to make it more aerodynamic.

It would be fuelled by hydrogen and liquid oxygen. The speed of the plane would be double that of two previously built supersonic planes, neither

of which is still in service: The Concorde, built by Aerospatiale and British Aircraft Corp. The Tupolev tu-144 or"Charger"built by Voronezh Aircraft Production Association.

No sonic boom on ground But the patent says its main improvement over those two is that it reduces the noise of the sonic boom a loud bang caused by shockwaves created by an object moving faster than the speed of sound."

if not the only one, preventing the opening of lines other than transatlantic ones for the Concorde aircraft,

The plane does that by being"near-vertical, "like a rocket, while ramping up to supersonic speed

and its cruising altitude of 30,000 to 35,000 metres 20 kilometres higher than conventional commercial aircraft.

"The sound energy dissipates in a ring around the plane, parallel to the ground, so that no shockwave hits the ground.

The only noise would be directly under the plane, "is confined to the vicinity of the airport

and lasts for roughly less than one minute, "the patent says. That caused Gupta to describe it as a"supersonic roller-coaster"in a video featuring the new patent.

"Airbus has filed other unusual aircraft patents in the past. For example, last summer, it filed a patent to bicycle-style seats on planes that would make it possible to cram more passengers in the same amount of space.

And last fall, it patented an aircraft cabin shaped like a giant flying saucer n

#More Indian Airports Set to Go Solar Recently, the Kochi airport in the south Indian state of Kerala switched to solar power

and created headlines across the world. Now, another airport is set to adopt solar power to meet a majority of its power needs.

The Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose airport in Kolkata will have a utility-scale solar power project of 15 to 20 MW capacity.

The project will be set up over a 55 acres area and would meet 60%of the airport power needs.

The airport authorities will soon launch tender for the implementation of the project with financial resources worth $20 million already having been allocated for the project.

The project will be able to meet the entire demand of the airport during the day,

but during the night the airport would be required to purchase power from the grid. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) recently announced that major airports in the western state of Rajasthan would also set up solar power projects to meet a part of their power demand.

The Jaipur airport already has a 100 kw rooftop solar power system and is planning to set up a 1. 8 MW ground-based power project.

Airports at Jodhpur Jaisalmer, and Bikaner are also planning to set up rooftop projects. Other Indian airports have also set up solar power projects to meet a part of the demand,

as well as earn additional revenue. Delhi Indira Gandhi International airport, operated by GMR Infrastructure, has a solar power project registered under the Renewable energy Certificates schemes.

Large commercial and industrial consumers in India are increasingly looking to set up renewable energy projects to meet their power demand,

instead of relying on traditional supply from utilities. Power tariffs levied by utilities have been increasing rapidly,

#Are self-driving cars a danger to cyclists? Google patents a way for autonomous vehicles to understand hand signals A Google patent has revealed that the firm self-driving cars will be able to detect

The documents reveals that the car array of sensors will notice a cyclist among other objects and vehicles on the road.

It does this by examining the height of objects it may think are compared cyclists with the average height of cyclists it has identified previously.

The car measures the distance between the top of the cyclist head and the pavement at various ranges,

whether a cyclist is present, and then identify parts of his or her body. Its computers compare the distance between the cyclist hand

and head to decide whether a cyclist is turning or stopping, the patent says. The algorithm will also look at the angle at which the cyclist elbow is bending,

and the size and shape of the cyclist hands, arms and head. he computing device may be configured to determine other subsets relating to other aspects of the cyclist, such as one or more subsets indicative of a type of vehicle of the cyclist,

the patent reads. HOW DOES GOOGLE'S AUTONOMOUS CAR WORK? Google's prototype two-seater'bubble'cars have buttons to begin and end the drive,

but no other controls. An onboard computer uses data from sensors, including radar, a laser and cameras,

passengers might set their destination by typing it into a map or using commands. The cars are expected also to be electric,

cars, road signs and markings and traffic lights. n some embodiments, the type of vehicle of the cyclist may include other means of transportation such as a scooter or moped.

The airbags would be made a new'memory foam'material that doesn't simply cause the pedestrian or cyclists to bounce off.

The head of self-driving cars for Google expects real people to be using them on public roads in two to five years.

Urmson wouldn't give a date for putting driverless cars on roads en masse saying that the system has to be safe enough to work properly.

Several other states have passed laws formally allowing autonomous cars on public roads without that restriction. The company in December announced that it had a fully functioning prototype that's been driving on its test track

Airbus files patent for a hypersonic jet more than double the speed of Concorde A trip from London to New york could take just one hour

The aerospace manufacturer is designing a hypersonic jet that it hopes will take people between the two major cities faster than most daily commutes.

The US Patent and Trademark Office recently approved an application from Airbus for the new jet,

The jet is described as'an air vehicle including a fuselage a gothic delta wing distributed on either side of the fuselage,

and a system of motors able to propel the air vehicle.''The patent describes how three different types of engine,

powered by different forms of hydrogen, would work together to propel the vehicle at speeds of 3, 425mph (5,

500km/h). Two turbo jets would allow the aircraft to climb vertically at takeoff, before retracting into the fuselage just before it reaches the speed of sound.

A rocket motor would take it to an altitude of 100, 000ft (30,000 metres. The wing-mounted ramjets would then take control to push the jet to its final speed.

Airbus says it has designed the craft's aerodynamics to limit sonic boom, which was a major problem for Concorde

Passengers on the aircraft will be limited to 20.''In the case of civil applications, the market envisaged is principally that of business travel and VIP passengers,

who require transcontinental return journeys within one day,'the patent states. Airbus thinks the jet would be able to complete trips such as Tokyo to Los angeles in just three hours.

The aircraft manufacturer says the hypersonic jet could also be for military applications, working to transport soldiers at rapid speeds.

But Airbus isn't the only one vying to create hypersonic aircraft technology. Last month, Air force bosses revealed they hope to have a hypersonic plane capable of crossing countries in minutes by 2023.

Several tests of hypersonic projectiles have already been carried out. Air force Chief Scientist Mica Endsley told Military. com that the Air Force and Darpa,

the Pentagon's research entity, plan to have a new and improved hypersonic air vehicle by 2023.

Experimental unmanned aircraft developed for the U s. Air force have gone already hypersonic during tests off the Southern California coast,

flying at more than five times the speed of sound. The Air force said a craft known as the X-51a Waverider flew for more than three minutes under power from its exotic scramjet engine and hit a speed of Mach 5. 1 last year.

The new air vehicle could be used to transport sensors equipment or weaponry in the future, depending upon how the technology develops.

Firms buy Nokia's map business in bid to beat tech firms with self driving cars and navigation German carmakers BMW,

They are used also in everything from consumer smartphone navigation to local transport services. At a later stage, the carmakers will invite private equity firm General Atlantic to join the consortium as an investor and potential mediator

The simulation shows Google's car being rear ended at 17mph at a junction in Mountain view after stopping at a red traffic lightin a blog post

when a cyclist ran a red light. Another car, driven by a human, went ahead and nearly hit the cyclist.

The system isn't perfect. On a test drive one of Google's Lexus SUVS seemed momentarily confused

Later, during a demonstration drive in Google's parking lot, the prototype-without a wheel or pedal-braked

#Robotic Landing gear could help pilots land on rocky mountains and moving boats Helicopters may be able to move in any direction in the air,

but rigid landing gear means they are only able to land and takeoff on stable, flat surfaces.

To solve this problem, engineers have designed Robotic Landing gear. The system comprises four articulated legs that can bend to land on uneven terrain

and it is hoped the prototype system may one day enable rescue and military helicopters to land in remote and rocky locations.

Instead of traditional landing gear, the system has jointed four legs that are able to fold up next to the helicopter fuselage or body while in flight.

Each leg has built a sensor into it, enabling the craft to'feel'its way onto a surface.

and uses a sensor to determine in real-time the appropriate angle to assume to ensure that the helicopter stays level without risking the rotor touching the landing area,

unmanned helicopter-successfully demonstrated the ability to land and take off from terrain that would be impossible to operate from with standard landing gear.

Having the ability to land on and take off from angled, irregular and moving surfaces would greatly expand the effectiveness of helicopters across many military and rescue missions, where stable,

flat surfaces are often unavailable. WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF ROBOTIC LEGS? Reduced risk of damage during hard landings, by as much as a factor of five, compared to conventional landing gear Stable landing and takeoff on sloping terrain of up to 20 degrees, more than twice current limits and on craggy,

boulder-strewn or otherwise irregular terrain Ship landings in violent sea states For example, the landing gear is designed to let a helicopter touch down on sloping terrain up to 20 degrees,

which is not currently possible, as well as on irregular terrain. Mr Bagai explained the system also reduced the risk of damage during hard landings by as much as a factor of five

compared to conventional landing gear. As well as working on new landing systems, Darpa is developing swarms of reusable drone aircraft that can work together to perform a mission,

which it has called the Gremlins program. The idea is to replace the expensive and increasingly vulnerable multi-function combat aircraft

Instead, they propose deploying from the air smaller unmanned aircraft, each with different capabilities, to perform a mission before retrieving them mid-air

Darpa said the program has been named deliberately Gremlins after the imps that British pilots during World war Two adopted as their good luck charms.

'Our goal is to conduct a compelling proof-of-concept flight demonstration that could employ intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) and other modular, non-kinetic payloads in a robust, responsive and affordable manner.'

fitting somewhere between missiles and conventional aircraft. The agency is hoping to build on its automated mid-air refuelling technology alongside the sea based platforms for capturing drones as they come into land.

'We wouldn't be discarding the entire airframe, engine, avionics and payload with every mission,

and recovered mid-flight along with navigation and flight control systems s
