#An apple a day could keep obesity awayscientists at Washington state University have concluded that nondigestible compounds in apples--specifically Granny smith apples--may help prevent disorders associated with obesity.

The study thought to be the first to assess these compounds in apple cultivars grown in the Pacific Northwest appears in October's print edition of the journal Food Chemistry.

We know that in general apples are a good source of these nondigestible compounds but there are differences in varieties said food scientist Giuliana Noratto the study's lead researcher.

Results from this study will help consumers to discriminate between apple varieties that can aid in the fight against obesity.

The tart green Granny smith apples benefit the growth of friendly bacteria in the colon due to their high content of nondigestible compounds including dietary fiber and polyphenols and low content of available carbohydrates.

The study showed that Granny smith apples surpass Braeburn Fuji Gala Golden delicious Mcintosh and Red delicious in the amount of nondigestible compounds they contain.

The nondigestible compounds in the Granny smith apples actually changed the proportions of fecal bacteria from obese mice to be similar to that of lean mice Noratto said.

The discovery could help prevent some of the disorders associated with obesity such as low-grade chronic inflammation that can lead to diabetes.

The data suggest that higher an individual's fruit and vegetable intake the lower the chance of their having low mental wellbeing. 31.4%of those with high mental wellbeing ate three-four portions and 28.4%ate one-two.

but along with smoking only fruit and vegetable consumption was associated consistently in both men and women.

Along with smoking fruit and vegetable consumption was related the health behaviour most consistently associated with both low and high mental wellbeing.

Ancient peach stones offer clues to fruits originsas peach trees in the Niagara Region of Ontario give up the last of their fruit for the season their ancestors halfway around the globe are clamouring for attention.

and two Chinese colleagues propose that the domestic peaches enjoyed worldwide today can trace their ancestry back at least 7500 years ago to the lower Yangtze river Valley in Southern China not far from Shanghai.

Previously no one knew where peaches were domesticated said Crawford. None of the botanical literature suggested the Yangtze Valley

Radiocarbon dating of ancient peach stones (pits) discovered in the Lower Yangtze river Valley indicates that the peach seems to have been diverged from its wild ancestors as early as 7500 years ago.

Unlike most trees the peach matures very quickly producing fruit within two to three years

Peach stones are represented well at archeological sites in the Yangtze valley so they compared the size

By comparing the size of the stones from each site they were able to discern peaches growing significantly larger over time in the Yangtze valley demonstrating that domestication was taking place The first peach stones in China most similar to modern

if a seed will produce the same fruit as the tree that produced it. It's a gamble.

If they simply started grafting it would guarantee the orchard would have the peaches they wanted.

Crawford and his colleagues think that it took about 3000 years before the domesticated peach resembled the fruit we know today.

The peaches we eat today didn't grow in the wild Crawford added. Generation after generation kept selecting the peaches they enjoyed.

The product went from thinly fleshed very small fruit to what we have today. Peaches produce fruit over an extended season today

but in the wild they have a short season. People must have selected not only for taste

and fruit size but for production time too. Discovering more about the origins of domesticated peaches tells us more about our human ancestors too Crawford noted.

Crops such as domesticated peaches indicate that early people weren't passive in dealing with the environment.

Not only did they understand grain production but the woodlands and certain trees were being manipulated early on.

There is a general sense that people in the past were not as smart as we are said Crawford.

and the domestication of peaches helps us understand this. Story Source: The above story is provided based on materials by University of Toronto.

#Improving how companies use technology to ship fresh producea University of Florida-led research team's development of a tracking system could change the way companies ship fresh fruits

Jeffrey Brecht director of the UF Institute of food and agricultural sciences'Center for Food Distribution and Retailing studied strawberries beginning with their harvesting from fields in Florida and California to their delivery to stores in Illinois Washington Alabama

The researchers placed two radio frequency identification (RFID) devices into each pallet of strawberries as they were picked.

The devices allowed them to track the strawberries'temperature from the field through precooling and into trucks

or FEFO was a better way to distribute delicate fruits and vegetables Companies normally measure only the temperature of an entire truck.

what time of the day berries were picked and even their placement on the truck. Strawberries picked in the cool of the morning and placed on a refrigerated truck would stay fresher longer than strawberries picked in the afternoon heat.

Brecht said under perfect conditions strawberries can maintain a good quality based on researchers'scale of

what's acceptable for up to 14 days. Less than perfect conditions mainly due to a lack of temperature control drastically reduce the berries'postharvest life.

It can take as long as four days to go from field to store but that would be for a cross-country trip such as from California to South carolina.

#Fruit consumption cuts cardiovascular disease risk by up to 40 percentdaily fruit consumption cuts the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) by up to 40%according to research presented at ESC Congress by Dr Huaidong

The findings from the seven year follow-up study of nearly 0. 5 million people in the China Kadoorie Biobank found that the more fruit people ate the more their risk of CVD declined.

and risk factors we have conducted the first large prospective study on the association of fruit with subtypes of stroke in Chinese adults from both rural and urban areas.

Habitual consumption of fruit was recorded at baseline according to five categories never monthly 1-3 days per week 4-6 days per week daily.

Some 18%of participants consumed fruit daily and 6. 3%never consumed fruit. The average amount of fruit eaten by the daily consumers was 1. 5 portions (150g)( 2). The researchers found that compared to people who never ate fruit those who ate fruit daily cut their CVD risks by 25-40%(around 15

%for IHD around 25%for ischaemic stroke and 40%for haemorrhagic stroke. There was a dose response relationship between the frequency of fruit consumption

and the risk of CVD (see figure). Dr Du said: Our data clearly shows that eating fresh fruit can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease including ischaemic heart disease and stroke (particularly haemorrhagic stroke.

And not only that the more fruit you eat the more your CVD risk goes down.

It does suggest that eating more fruit is compared beneficial to less or no fruit. The researchers also found that people who consumed fruit more often had significantly lower blood pressure (BP.

Eating fruit daily was associated with 3. 4/4. 1 mmhg lower systolic/diastolic BP compared to those who never ate fruit.

Dr Du said: Our data shows that eating fresh fruit was associated with lower baseline BP.

We also found that the beneficial effect of fruit on the risk of CVD was independent of its impact on baseline BP.

In a separate analysis the researchers examined the association of fruit consumption with total mortality

and CV mortality in more than 61000 patients from the China Kadoorie Biobank who had CVD or hypertension at baseline.

They found that compared to those who never ate fruit daily consumers of fruit cut their overall risk of death by 32%.

%They also reduced their risks of dying from IHD by 27%and from stroke by around 40%.

Patients with CVD and hypertension should also be encouraged to consume more fresh fruit. Many western populations have experienced a rapid decrease in CVD mortality during the past several decades especially stroke mortality

Improved access to fresh fruit may well have contributed importantly to that decline. The researchers concluded: Our results show the benefit of eating fruit in the healthy general population and in patients with CVD and hypertension.

Fruit consumption is an effective way to cut CVD risk and should not only be regarded as'might be useful'.

'Policies are needed to promote the availability affordability and acceptability of fresh fruit through educational and regulatory measures.

#Creating pomegranate drug to stem Alzheimers, Parkinsonsdr Olumayokun Olajide's research will look to produce compound derivatives of punicalagin for a drug that would treat neuro-inflammation

and some of its symptoms curbed by a natural compound that is found in pomegranate. Also the painful inflammation that accompanies illnesses such as rheumatoid arthritis

The key breakthrough by Dr Olajide and his co-researchers is to demonstrate that punicalagin which is a polyphenol--a form of chemical compound--found in pomegranate fruit can inhibit inflammation in specialised brain cells known as micrologia.

but the punicalagin in pomegranate could prevent it or slow down its development. Dr Olajide worked with co-researchers--including four Phd students--in the University of Huddersfield's Department of Pharmacy and with scientists at the University of Freiburg in Germany.

He is still working on the amounts of pomegranate that are required in order to be effective. But we do know that regular intake

and regular consumption of pomegranate has a lot of health benefits--including prevention of neuro-inflammation related to dementia he says recommending juice products that are 100 per cent pomegranate meaning that approximately 3. 4 per cent will be punicalagin the compound

Dr Olajide states that most of the antioxidant compounds are found in the outer skin of the pomegranate not in the soft part of the fruit.

although this has yet to be evaluated scientifically pomegranate will be useful in any condition for which inflammation--not just neuro-inflammation--is a factor such as rheumatoid arthritis Parkinson's and cancer.

Fruit, vegetable intake still too low; Human nutritionist says to focus on lunchchanges to a supplemental nutrition program are improving the number of fruits eaten daily by children

but kids and adults still aren't reaching the recommended daily intake amounts. A Kansas State university human nutritionist says to reach that amount you need to focus on lunch.

A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finds that children between the ages of 2 and 18 are eating more whole fruits

Sandy Procter assistant professor of human nutrition and coordinator of the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program in the university's College of Human ecology says the switch from fruit juice to whole fruit is a big improvement.

Procter attributes the fruit intake improvements to changes made to the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women Infants and Children or WIC.

In 2007 on a trial basis the WIC program began allowing the purchase of fresh fruits

Despite the improvement most children and adults are not getting enough fruits and vegetables. According to the 2013 State Indicator Report on Fruits and Vegetables from the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion the average American eats one serving of fruit and 1. 3

servings of vegetables per day. In Kansas the percent of people who reported consuming fruit less than one time a day is 41 percent.

For vegetables 22 percent reported eating less than one serving of vegetables a day with French fries included as a vegetable option.

Procter emphasizes lunch as the most important meal for fruit and vegetable consumption and says that

if these nutritious components aren't included in lunch it is very hard to reach the recommended five servings a day of fruits and vegetables.
