#How a breast milk antibody plays an important role in infant gut development Breastfeeding is an important strategy to ensure a healthy balance of good bacteria in an infant s gut.
Now, Eric Rogier from the University of Kentucky has found a milk antibody called SIGA also helps to set up the right community of gut microbes.
Milk contains a vast cocktail of molecules, and immunoglobin A (Iga or SIGA) is one of them.
It s in milk, mucus, tears, salivaanywhere where our cells shunt fluid into the outside world.
mother s milk is the only source of the antibody. When Rogier engineered mutant mice that couldn t produce SIGA in their milk,
he found that their pups grew up with peculiar guts. They harboured with different communities of gut bacteria
When we took lymph nodes from offspring who didn t get SIGA in their milk, they were loaded with bacteria.
It s unique in isolating the effect of a single (major) ingredient of milk, but Kaetzel notes that breastfed infants also get a wide spectrum of other helpful substances.
when the time comes for them to produce milk? There could be some really exciting transgenerational consequences from not ingesting siga in mother s milk,

#Breast Milk Bought Online May have High Levels of Bacteria Breast milk sold online may be contaminated with disease-causing bacteria researchers have found.
and sell breast milk over the Internet researchers launched a study to see how safe that milk really is.
They sent anonymous purchasing requests to about 500 sellers on a popular U s. milk-sharing website.
and finally about 100 milk shipments arrived. We found three quarters of the milk that we studied was contaminated either with high levels of bacteria
or certain disease-causing bacteria like the kind found in human waste said study author Sarah Keim researcher at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus Ohio.
and storing milk or bacteria from other foods in the freezer where milk is stored she said.
While certain bacteria are natural components of breast milkâ and are healthy for the baby abnormal levels of some types of bacteria
A previous study showed about 20 percent of people looking online for breast milk mention they have a baby who was born premature
whether the milk has been collected and stored safely. The agency however doesn't regulate breast milk as it's categorized differently than blood
or other highly regulated donated tissues. In the study the researchers compared the Internet-purchased samples with unpasteurized breast milk samples from a hospital's milk bank
and found higher overall bacterial counts in the Internet samples. Sixty-four percent of the Internet samples tested positive for staphylococcous compared to 25 percent of milk bank samples.
The results also showed that each additional transit day was associated with an increase in total bacteria count in milk purchased online.
There are other avenues for risk as well the researchers said. Women who are lactating and selling their extra milk could be using medications
of which could find their way into the milk. There's also the possibility that milk has been watered down or mixed with cow milk
which is not healthy for the infant Keim said. Mothers who want to provide breast milkâ to their infants
Women who produce extra milk may want to consider donating to a milk bank she said.
#Breast Milk Contains Over 700 Bacteria species Humans carry around loads of living bacteria that are crucial for good health
but this microbial diversity could help the baby to digest the milk or to give the infant's immune system a boost researchers say.
The microbiome of breast milk was mapped out using a DNA sequencing technique known as pyrosequencing which generates extremely large numbers of small DNA tags copied from the genes of organisms being examined.
For their study researchers examined both colostrum which is the first secretion of the mammary glands after birth
or whether oral bacteria of the breast-fed baby enter the breast milk and thus change its composition researchers Marã a Carmen Collado of the Institute of Agrochemistry
Among other findings of the study the breast milk of overweight mothers and mothers who had planned caesareans contained a lower diversity of bacteria species compared with that of other moms.
Mothers who had unplanned caesareans showed breast milk composition that was very similar to that of mothers who had a vaginal birth the researchers noted.
If the breast milk bacteria discovered in this study were important for the development of the immune system its addition to infant formula could decrease the risk of allergies asthma

#Healthier Fatty acids Found in Organic Milk Organic milk contains a healthier balance of omega-6
and omega-3 fatty acids compared with milk from cows raised on conventionally managed dairy farms according to a new study.
Theâ healthier fatty acid profile  of organic milk is likely a result of cows foraging on grass the researchers said.
The scientists took 400 samples of organic and conventional milk from multiple regions in the United states over an 18-month period
and looked for the levels of various fatty acids in the milk. In particular they looked for the balance between omega-6 andâ omega-3 contents  essential fatty acids that the human body cannot make from other raw materials
The lab results showed that organic milk had an average ratio of omega-6 fatty acid toâ omega-3 fatty acid  of 2. 3
whereas conventional milk had an average ratio of 5. 8 according to the study published today (Dec 9) in the journal PLOS ONE.
and legumes promotes cow health as well as improves the fatty acid profile of organic dairy products said study author Charles Benbrook of the Center for Sustaining Agriculture and Natural resources at Washington state University.
The impact of fresh grass on the fatty acid profile of the milk is accepted a well phenomenon.
A conventional farm that provides their cows with access to grass would reap the same benefit in terms of the quality of the milk Benbrook added. 6 Foods That Are Good for Your Brain Organic farmers are required to follow standards set
The researchers also found seasonal differences in organic milk's fatty acid composition. Organic milk produced in spring
and summer had higher levels of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) an important group of fatty acids. CLA levels go up sharply beginning in May
The team also compared the fatty acids in dairy products to those in fish and found that recommended intakes of full-fat milk products supply more of the major omega-3 fatty acid ALA than do recommended servings of fish.

#High-Fat Dairy May Lower Breast cancer Survival Breast cancer patients who eat a lot of high-fat dairy foods may be increased at an risk of dying according to a new study.
Over the 12-year study nearly 12 percent of women with breast cancer who ate more than one serving daily of high-fat dairy products died from their cancer
In dairy products female hormones such as estrogen are found primarily in the fat. For women with breast cancer If you're consuming a lot of high-fat diary whole milk
or full-fat cheese it would be prudent to shift to lower-fat option said study researcher Candyce H. Kroenke a staff scientist at Kaiser permanente in Oakland Calif. Eating more low-fat dairy
did not increase women's risk of dying the researchers said. Women in the study who ate more than one serving daily of low-fat dairy were no more likely to die than those who ate less than half a serving daily.
The new study cannot speak to whether eating a lot of high-fat dairy products may contribute to women developing breast cancer in the first place Kroenke said.
But if the hypothesis tested in this study that the estrogen in dairy fat fuels cancer is held up in future studies it would suggest that women who eat a lot of high-fat dairy have a higher risk of developing estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer
she said. This type of breast cancer is the most common type. The researchers considered 1900 women in California and Utah who had been diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer between one and four years previously.
Some of the high-fat dairy products the researchers tracked were whole milk ice cream and cheeses and yogurts that were not low-fat or nonfat.
During the study 349 women had their breast cancer recur and 189 died of the disease.
and age they concluded that those who ate more than one serving of high-fat dairy daily were 64 percent more likely to die of any cause
The researchers said their findings show that it was saturated fat from dairy products in particular rather than saturated fat in the diet in general that was linked with breast cancer survival.
Kroenke noted that for the purposes of the study 2 percent milk was considered a low-fat product.
People generally tend to under-report how much they really eat so it's possible that the study underestimated the effect of eating a lot of high-fat dairy she said.
Research into a possible link between dairy consumption and breast cancer has yielded mixed results. But most previous studies didn't separately consider high
-and low-fat dairy products and they may have different effects on cancer according to the study. The study is published online today (March 14) in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
Dairy products high in fat may prove deadly for breast cancer patients. This story was provided by Myhealthnewsdaily a sister site to Livescience.
