Symptoms, Treatment & Coping Strategies Lactose intolerance is the inability to digest the main sugar found in milk and other dairy products.

Lactose intolerance is different than milk allergy since the latter is related to the proteins in milk rather than lactose.

Symptoms and Causes Although reduced levels of lactase could result in improper absorption of lactose only people with low lactase level

and bloating fter consuming milk and other dairy products. The initial diagnosis of lactose intolerance can be very simple t s a matter of eliminating certain foods from the diet to see

whether they need to cut back on milk and dairy products according to research published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology  Treatments & Medications Over-the-counter pills or drops that contain lactase can be taken before meals to help alleviate

or eliminate symptoms. Though according to the Mayo Clinic not everyone with lactose intolerance is helped by these products.

Adults who are lactose intolerant can ultimately recondition their digestive system to tolerate up to 250 milliliters of milk bout a glass f they drink milk in gradually increasing portions.

The most straightforward way would be to reduce the amount of milk or daily products in their diet.

Also it may help to divide daily milk and dairy products into several small portions and to take it with other foods.

Processed dairy such as yogurt and cheeses are tolerated usually better because the lactose is metabolized partially by bacteria during their preparation r

#Milk and Yogurt May Boost Hipbone Strength When it comes to improving bone health not all dairy products are equally beneficial.

In fact some foods in the dairy case do a better job than others at strengthening bones a new study suggests.

Researchers at the Institute for Aging Research at Hebrew Seniorlife in Boston found that milk

and yogurt are the best dairy choices for increasing bone mineral density in the hip.

But they found no evidence that these two foods were linked to better bone density in the spine.

All the people in the dairy study completed a 126-item food frequency questionnaire which indicated how often they ate certain foods each week.

Because the number of hip fractures in the group was so small the researchers were unable to draw firm conclusions about dairy consumption

Cream is definitely different from the rest of the dairy products said lead author Shivani Sahni an assistant scientist at the institute.

Previous research has explored the link between people's milk-drinking habits during childhood or as adults and their bone mineral density as they grow older.

However fewer studies have honed in on various types of dairy products and compared their effects on bone health and hip fracture risk.

The findings appear in the February issue of the journal Archives of Osteoporosis. A food company that makes yogurt sponsored the research.

Researchers found that people who downed 2. 6 servings of milk yogurt and cheese a day

Sahni suspects the various nutrients in dairy foods their protein calcium and Vitamin d content for example work in synergy

#Raw milk Sickened Scores Despite Inspections Even under the best circumstances unpasteurized milk can make people sick a new report concludes.

In one of the biggest outbreaks of campylobacter bacteria seen nationally in recent years raw milk from a Pennsylvania dairy farm sickened 148 people in four states in January 2012 according to the report.

The report which details what happened during the outbreak said the dairy that sold the milk had a permit for selling unpasteurized milk

The farm was among the largest sellers of unpasteurized milk in the state. The dairy also tested its own milk for E coli bacteria more often than was required.

The vast majority of the sick people drank the milk before its best by date.

The only deficiencies that investigators found were that a mechanical milk bottle capper was broken so employees had capped the bottles by hand

and that the water used to clean equipment was recommended cooler than (110 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit instead of 160 to 170 degrees F)

and this campylobacter outbreak demonstrates the ongoing hazards of unpasteurized dairy products according to the report authors from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state health departments.

Raw milk is riskier than most foods said Douglas Powell a professor of food safety at Kansas State university.

or lettuce there are many more consumers of those foods than consumers of raw milk he said. Bacteria commonly found in the digestive tracts of farm animals including campylobacter

and E coli O157 can easily find their way into milk as it is pumped and bottled on a farm Powell said.

Fecal matter just ends up in the milk it's not like you can see it he said.

Powell said he advises that raw milk not be given to children. As adults you're free to choose he said.

The dairy immediately suspended unpasteurized milk sales when it was informed of the outbreak. The researchers recommended that state officials consider more regulation of unpasteurized milk such as monthly pathogen testing.

However consumers can never be unpasteurized certain that milk is free of pathogens even it is certified and from a dairy that seems to be functioning well the report said.

The only way to prevent unpasteurized milk ssociated disease outbreaks is for consumers to refrain from consuming unpasteurized milk the researchers wrote in their report.

The number of dairies with permits to sell unpasteurized dairy products in Pennsylvania grew from 26 in 2002 to 153 in 2013 according to the report.

The increase was driven by consumer demand and the higher prices that unpasteurized milk producers can get for their products the report said.

#Raw milk: 1 in 6 Who Drink It Gets Sick On average one in six people who drink raw milk becomes ill with bacterial or parasite infections according to researchers at the Minnesota Department of health.

The researchers found 530 laboratory-confirmed cases of infections including bacterial infections from Salmonella E coli

and Campylobacter as well as parasitic infections called cryptosporidiosis among Minnesota patients who reportedâ drinking raw milkâ between 2001 and 2010.

Raw milk is milk that has not been pasteurized (heated to kill germs and then cooled quickly).

However many cases of such infections aren't reported or confirmed in a laboratory. Based on known rates of underdiagnosing these infections the researchers estimated that 20502 Minnesotans

or 17 percent of raw milk consumers actually became ill during the study period after consuming raw milk according to the study published today (Dec 11) in the journal Emerging Infectious diseases a public health journal of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The risk for illness associated with raw milk is far greater than what was determined based on recognized outbreaks said study researcher Trisha Robinson an epidemiologist at the Minnesota Department of health.

They said the sporadic cases of infection that occurred in people who had consumed recently raw milk could not be linked definitely with the milk.

From 1998 through 2011 a total of 148 outbreaks associated with the consumption of raw milk products were documented in the United states resulting in 2384 illnesses 284 hospitalizations and two deaths according to the CDC.

Thirty states in the United states permit the limited sale of raw milk. Raw milk can cause many infectious diseases

and foodborne illnesses because it can contain harmful bacteria that are killed not during pasteurization. However raw milk advocates claim it is healthier

and tastes better. Raw milk's health benefits are not scientifically proven Robinson said. But what we can say is that people are getting sick after drinking raw milk.

#Raw milk: Pregnant Women & Infants Shouldn't Drink It, Pediatricians Say Pregnant women infants and children who drink raw milk are at particularly high risk of developing serious life-threatening illnesses said a leading U s. group of pediatricians.

People should consume only pasteurized milk the American Academy of Pediatrics said in a new policy statement reaffirming its position on the issue.

Pregnant women who drink raw milk may face a fivefold increase in risk of the parasite infection toxoplasmosis the doctors'group said;

and infection with bacteria called Listeria which are also found in raw milk has been linked with high rates of stillbirths preterm delivery as well as sepsis

and meningitis in the newborns said the AAP researchers who reviewed studies on the risks of raw milk consumption.

Children the elderly and people whose immune systems have been suppressed due to other diseases are also particularly at risk for becoming severely ill after consuming raw milk the researchers said.

The AAP said it endorses a ban on the sale of raw or unpasteurized milk and its products such as cheese and encourages pediatricians to contact their state representatives to support such a ban according to the statement published today (Dec 16) in the journal Pediatrics.

Sales of raw milk are legal in 30 U s. states although the Food and Drug Administration banned the interstate sale of unpasteurized milk in 1987.

According to estimates 1 percent to 3 percent of all dairy products consumed in the United states are pasteurized not

which means they can carry pathogens such as Listeria Campylobacter Salmonella Brucella and E coli. Top 7 Germs in Food that Make You Sick Over the past decade consumption of raw milk has resulted in 93 illness outbreaks 1837 illnesses 195 hospitalizations and two deaths according to the Centers for Disease

Control and Prevention. One study published last week by researchers at the Minnesota Department of public health found that as many as one person in six who drinks raw milk becomes ill.

The bacterial infections that come from raw milk often lead to diarrhea and stomach cramps. But for vulnerable people infections can have serious sometimes life-threatening consequences.

For example pregnant women unborn fetuses and newborns are 13 to 17 times more likely to develop severe illness because of listeria infection compared with other groups of people studies have shown.

And 20 percent of pregnant women who become infected with Listeria experience a miscarriage or stillbirth according to the AAP.

Two-thirds of infants whose mothers are infected with Listeria develop infections such as pneumonia sepsis or meningitis.

Proponents of raw milk claim it is healthier because it contains natural factors that are inactivated by pasteurization.

Substantial data suggest that pasteurized milk confers equivalent health benefits compared with raw milk without the additional risk of bacterial infections the researchers wrote in the statement.

#Why Do People Drink Milk? Milk is recognized widely as a nutritious drink for people of all ages it's a good source of protein calcium Vitamin d potassium and other vitamins and minerals.

Despite the health benefits of milk consumption of milk in the United states dropped to its lowest levels in nearly 30 years in 2011 with more than half of adults cutting milk completely out of their diet according to the U s. Department of agriculture.

Among other factors a greater awareness of lactose intolerance may have something to do with the decline in milk consumption.

The prevalence of lactose intolerance the inability to digest the milk sugar lactose varies widely among countries and ethnicities.

But why do some people continue to drink milk into adulthood? As all mammals do human infants produce hefty amounts of lactase an enzyme that allows the body to digest lactose without lactase babies can't digest their mothers'nutrient-rich milk.

At around age 5 lactase production decreases possibly to help facilitate weaning. But about 7500 years ago in Central europe a genetic mutation popped up causing some people to produce lactase well into adulthood according to a 2009 study in the journal PLOS Computational Biology.

With poor crops and possibly contaminated water sources they increasingly turned to cow's milk for sustenance making it a regular part of their diet.

#Yogurt Lovers Have Better Diets People who like yogurt may be enjoying more than its taste and texture.

and getting more key nutrients than people who never eat the cultured dairy product  new research shows.

As a group people who said they ate yogurt also reported consuming higher amounts of other good for you-you foods such as fruits vegetables nuts fish

and whole grains than did people who didn't eat yogurt. And their diets obtained fewer calories from processed meats refined grains

and beer than did the diets of non-yogurt eaters according to the study which received some funding from a yogurt manufacturer.

The peer-reviewed findings are available online in the journal Nutrition Research. Yogurt is a very good source of many shortfall nutrients calcium potassium

and magnesium that Americans don't currently consume enough of said study author Paul Jacques of  Tufts University.

Yogurt is a good way to meet your dietary requirements for nutrients that you may not be currently eating.

All the men and women in the yogurt study filled out a 126-item questionnaire indicating how frequently they had eaten certain foods during the previous year.

Boosting shortfall nutrients People participating in the study were asked to recall how often they ate a one-cup serving of yogurt.

Researchers found that 53.8 percent of the participants ate yogurt. Among the women 64 percent were yogurt-eaters;

among the men 41 percent were. The average amount of yogurt eaten was two and one-quarter cups a week.

Yogurt accounted for between 1 percent and 6 percent of daily calories depending upon how much people ate.

In addition to having a better-quality diet the men and women who regularly spooned in some yogurt had higher potassium intakes.

They also were 48 percent less likely to have inadequate levels of calcium; 38 percent less likely to be deficient in magnesium;

We found that yogurt consumers had higher intakes of just about every nutrient we measured Jacques said.

If people substitute yogurt for less healthy foods in the diet it may help eliminate the inadequate intake of shortfall nutrients.

A milk alternative The data were collected between 1998 and 2005 before the Greek yogurt boom hit the U s. Â Even now

however levels of yogurt consumption in the U s. lag behind those seen in some European countries and parts of the Middle east.

In fact very few American adults meet the overall dietary guideline for dairy products which calls for three servings a day of milk and other low-fat dairy products.

One serving is considered one cup of cow's milk soy milk or yogurt; one and a half ounces of a hard cheese like Swiss or cheddar;

or two cups of cottage cheese for example. A one-cup serving of low-fat yogurt has a similar nutrition profile to that of a cup of low-fat milk

but with roughly 50 percent more potassium calcium and magnesium the researchers pointed out. Pass it on:

Yogurt eaters seem to have healthier diets overall. This story was provided by Myhealthnewsdaily a sister site to Livescience.
