#The Best Foods (and Strategies) for Eating at Your Computer Everybody eats at their computer at some point.

We recently asked you what your favorite keyboard-friendly foods were, and you guys had a lot of great suggestions#oth of good foods to eat

and strategies to keeping your workspace clean. Here are some of our favorites#Good Foods that Dont Make a Mess Many of you wrote in with some great food suggestions that wont make a mess

(or will be easy to clean up). Some of the best included: Wraps and Burritos, if youre skilled

and dont let any sauces or dressings spill out the end. Also, if you keep the foil or bag on the end,

youll be less likely to spill. Sandwiches tend to be more prone to crumbs than wraps,

though if you put the end of it in plastic wrap or something similar, you may be able to get by.

Meats like steak, chicken breast, or ham. These are great because, unless you put some sort of sauce on them,

they dont have much to drip on your keyboard, and they wont get anything messy on your hands.

Fruits and vegetables tend to be pretty neat and wont get anything on your hands.

which could drip juice on your keyboard and get quite sticky. Dried fruits and nuts are really good ideas too. th salad dressing.

The great thing about salad is that, while its easy to drop pieces of your salad all over the place,

those pieces are usually big pieces of lettuce, cucumber, or whatever that are easy to pick up off your keyboard without making a mess.

Foods that act as glue#:#A number of you noted that certain foods, like mashed potatoes

and refried beans, are great not only for their lack of mess, but because they can act as a kind of glue#that holds more difficult food like rice

or peas easier to eat without getting all over the place. Cereal, in a cup or a bottle:

Cereal is likely to spill milk and small flakes all over the place, but many of you noted that eating cereal in a cup,

or even in a recycled water bottle, takes away all the mess. Non-sugary drinks in travel mugs:

Sugary drinks, like juice and pop, are going to be very sticky if spilled. Alternatively, travel mugs are a great way to avoid nasty spills.

All in all, the best foods are ones you can eat with utensils (so you dont get anything on your hands),

foods that come in large pieces rather than small (so you can easily pick it off

if you do spill), and solid, dry foods that arent crumbly. If you have some food that you cant eat with traditional utensils,

chopsticks work really well as a replacement. Strategies Many of you also had great suggestions of ways to get around the food problem by protecting

and cleaning your keyboard, rather than avoiding certain foods. What I personally do at home is use my sliding keyboard tray to my advantage.

My keyboard slides out from under the top of my desk, so when Im eating,

I just slide it away and go to town. My particular tray leaves a lot of room between the keyboard and the desk,

so I can even slip my hands in and type at the same time if I want to#t isnt the most comfortable or ergonomic,

but it works just fine while Im eating lunch. If all else fails youll need to clean your keyboard.

#Scientists Fatten up Monkeys to Study Human Obesity Shiva is twice his normal weight and carries much of it in his belly.

Shiva sits around too much, eating rich, fatty foods and sipping sugary drinks, like many these days.

He has the pot belly to prove it, one that nearly touches the floor#when hes on all fours, that is.

Shiva belongs to a colony of monkeys who have been fattened up to help scientists study the twin human epidemics of obesity and diabetes.

a caged monkeys food intake is much easier for researchers to count and control. Nonhuman primates dont lie to you,#said Dr. Grove,

We know exactly how much they are eating.##To allow monitoring of their food intake, some of the obese monkeys are kept in individual cages for months or years,

which also limits their exercise. That is in contrast to most of the monkeys here who live in group indoor/outdoor cages with swings

Rhythm Pharmaceuticals, a start-up company in Boston, tested its experimental diet drug on some of the Oregon monkeys.

After eight weeks, the animals reduced their food intake 40 percent and lost 13 percent of their weight, without apparent heart problems.

The monkeys daily diet consists of dried chow pellets, with about one-third of the calories coming from fat, similar to a typical American diet,

though the diet also contains adequate protein and nutrients. They can eat as many pellets as they want.

They also snack daily on a 300-calorie chunk of peanut butter and are treated sometimes to popcorn or peanuts.

Gummy bears were abandoned because they stuck to the monkeys teeth. They also drink a fruit-flavored punch with the fructose equivalent of about a can of soda a day.

In all, they might consume about twice as many calories as a normal-weight monkey. Dr. Grove and researchers at some other centers say the high-fructose corn syrup appears to accelerate the development of obesity and diabetes.

It wasnt until we added those carbs that we got all those other changes, including those changes in body fat,#

or tripled their food intake when they got the drug. The surprising result prompted Pfizer,

when pregnant monkeys ate the high-fat diet, their offspring had metabolic problems. The babies were also more prone to anxiety

#But he said the study found the diet induced chemical changes in the brains of fetuses that might be responsible for the problems in the offspring.

The studies also found something else that could be important for people#that eating a healthy diet during pregnancy reduced troubles in the offspring.

that the diet of a pregnant woman matters more than whether she is obese. He also defended keeping the animals in some studies in individual cages.

#But Dr. Grove said he needed the animals separated at all times so they could snack between meals,

Our research model is a sedentary lifestyle with calorically dense diets, #he said. As pharmaceutical companies move some research to less expensive countries,

#Why Chocolate Is Bad For Dogs Chocolate and dogs do not mix. To most of us, chocolate is a delicious substance.

50 mg/oz So, the general rules for the amount of chocolate that will be toxic for a dog:

Milk chocolate: one ounce per pound of body weight (so, without intervention, a 16 pound dog (7. 2 kg) would likely die from eating one pound of milk chocolate) Dark chocolate:

1/3 of an ounce per pound of body weight (around 5 ounces of dark chocolate for that same 16 pound dog) Bakers chocolate:

1/9 of an ounce per pound of body weight (around 1. 8 ounces of bakers chocolate for a 16 pound dog) Cocoa powder:

1/16 of an ounce per pound of dog (around 1 ounce of cocoa powder to kill a 16 pound dog) On the other extreme end,

it would take about 200 pounds of white chocolate consumed within a 17 hour period to reach toxic levels of theobromine for a 16 pound dog.

The low quantity of theobromine here is because white chocolate is made from cocoa butter, sugar, and milk,

but no cocoa solids. LINK via The Presurfer Share Thissubscribedel. icio. usfacebookredditstumbleupontechnorati n

#Doctors Warn Energy Drinks Putting Consumers at Risk as Sales Soar Around the world there are signs that for some people who consume these drinks,

With Americans chugging energy drinks like never before, fears are growing among doctors that the ingredients might be putting some consumers at risk.

The beverages contain a hodgepodge of caffeine, sugar and dietary supplements such as vitamins and herbal extracts,

heart problems and kidney or liver damage in people who had downed one or more nonalcoholic energy drinks#including brands like Red Bull,

Spike Shooter and Redline. Across the world there are signs that for some people who consume these drinks,

there are side effects, #said Dr. Steven E. Lipshultz, who heads the department of pediatrics at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of medicine.

and more research, comes only months after a U s. crackdown on alcoholic caffeinated beverages such as Phusion Projects Four Loko.

U s. sales of nonalcoholic energy drinks are expected to hit $9 billion this year with children and young adults accounting for half the market,

Because the beverages are classified as nutritional supplements, they have received much less scrutiny and are under fewer restrictions than both foods and drugs.

Manufacturers claim their products will enhance both mental and physical performance. Red Bulls website, for instance, says energy drink will increase concentration and reaction speed,

it sold in excess of 4 billion cans and bottles of the drink, which is now available in more than160 countries.

He began to take an interest in energy drinks a few years ago, when four kids from South Florida were brought to the hospital after swallowing a vitamin concoction their teacher had bottled.

Of course, isolated anecdotes dont prove the drinks are to blame. But they do have doctors wondering whether some people,

and often loads of sugar. High doses of yohimbine have been linked to increased blood pressure and heart rate.

if they were drinking energy drinks, #he told Reuters Health. Now I am and it is the basis for a discussion.#

and largely ignores in its conclusions the genuine, scientifically rigorous examination of energy drinks by reputable national authorities.#

#The American Beverage Association, which represents several manufacturers, seconded Red Bulls criticism. Most mainstream energy drinks actually contain about half the caffeine of a similar size cup of coffeehouse coffee,

#it said in a statement. In fact, young adults getting coffee from popular coffeehouses are getting about twice as much caffeine as they would from a similar size energy drink.#

#Lipshultz countered that hed found caffeine contents ranging anywhere from 75 to 400 milligrams (mg) per container,

And there is another difference between coffee and energy drinks, which are marketed often toward athletes. If youre a 16-year-old who just came out of football practice,

But you might have three energy drinks, #Lipshultz said. In fact high amounts of caffeine increase urine production, making our bodies lose water.

sports drinks are what you should be said drinking, #Lipshultz. Other experts recommend that tried and tested drink, water.

Concluded Lipshultz: If there is no real upside to taking (energy drinks), and they clearly put some people at risk,

my personal feeling is we should protect kids.##Via Reuters Share Thissubscribedel. icio. usfacebookredditstumbleupontechnorati e

#Chocolate Healthier Than Fruit: Study Researchers found that chocolates contain more healthy plant compounds and antioxidants, gram-for-gram, than fruit juice.

Chocoholics, you can now gorge on your favourite treat without a sense of guilt, for scientists have claimed that its actually healthier than many fruit.

but chocolate is being heralded as the latest super food#by the scientists who carried out a study.

and antioxidants gram-for-gram than fruit juice and provides far more nutritional goodness than food experts had thought previously.

the raw ingredient of chocolate, with powders made from fruits like acai berries, blueberries, cranberries and pomegranates, the Daily Express reported.

Research into dark chocolate, containing around 60%cocoa, and cocoa drinks found that they too had more antioxidant activity and more flavanols#health-giving plant chemicals#than fruit.

The discovery means cocoa beans meet the nutritional criteria needed for fruits to be classed as super fruits#according to the scientists at the Hershey Center for Health & Nutrition in the US.

The compounds in dark chocolate are just as good as the botanical compounds in fruit. Cacao seeds should be considered a super fruit

as super foods,#said lead scientist Debra Miller. However, the findings do not alter the fact that their favourite is high in fat and sugar,

meaning dieticians say it should be balanced with less yummy foods such as brown rice and pulses, say the scientists.

Dark chocolate needs to be considered as more of a tropical fruit like avocado which has a high fat content so you need to moderate the calories side of things.

But people could create drinks and recipes containing cocoa to get the benefits without the calories,

By now, most of us have read the miscellaneous (numerous) statements from companies like Whole Foods, Organic Valley, Stonyfield,

and the Non-GMO Project in defense of their participation in the so-called coexistence#talks with the USDA and proponents of GE alfalfa.

Fighting for a Ban on GE Alfalfa? The companies who have posted defenses of their participation in these talks have said, to a one,

that they believed in a ban of GE alfalfa. And that when that was taken off the table (more on this later) they were fighting for protections for farmers and consumers.

Below is Walter Robb, co-president of Whole Foods, and Gary Hirshberg, CEO of Stonyfields early contributions to the discussion (you can read the entire transcript of the meeting online.)

And we think that#we have not even had a chance to read the whole thing Ecological Impact Statement report about GE alfalfa over the weekend.

And I think its clear from your remarks Vilsack that this is a much bigger process than just the resolution of the alfalfa issue,

A Ban of GE Alfalfa Was Off the Table Back in December In December, to no ones surprise,

#Global Food Prices Hit Record Levels Sugar is among the items in the FAOS food price index.

Global food prices are moving ever higher, hitting record levels last month as a jittery market reacted to unpredictable weather and tight supplies, according to a United nations report released Thursday.

It was the seventh month in a row of food price increases, according to the United nations Food and agriculture organization,

And with some basic food stocks low, prices will probably continue reaching new heights, at least until the results of the harvest next summer are known,

#Scattered bright spots in the report led experts to suggest that a repeat of the 2008 food riots stemming from similar sharp price increases might not be imminent.

and meat prices stable, they noted. But the overall uncertainty and inflation could eventually make the situation worse than three years ago,

Riots and demonstrations erupting across the Middle east are inspired not directly by rising food prices alone, experts noted,

Egypt was among more than a dozen countries that experienced food riots in 2008. The F. A o. price index

which tracks 55 food commodities for export, rose 3. 4 percent in January, hitting its highest level

Countries not dependent on food imports are affected less by global volatility. Still, food prices are expected to rise 2 percent to 3 percent in the United states this year.

Four main factors are seen as driving prices higher: weather, higher demand, smaller yields and crops diverted to biofuels.

Heavy rains in Australia damaged wheat to the extent that much of its usually high-quality crop has been downgraded to feed, experts noted.

Sugar prices are also at a 30-year high, he said. Prices for cereals are rising but still below their April 2008 peak.

Food prices are not only rising but they are also volatile and will continue this way into the future,

Changing diets around the world stemming from higher incomes, especially in places like China and India, mean a greater demand for meat and better grains.

including $6 billion for a food security fund housed at the World bank. Just $925 million of those pledges has been paid

as one billion people already go without sufficient food daily. Derek Headey, an economist with the International Food Policy Research Institute, noted that in 2007 and 2008 many African countries were hit hard by soaring import bills,

as were nations spread across the world, like Afghanistan, Pakistan and Ecuador. But some of the worlds largest and poorest countries experienced rapid economic growth and only modest food inflation,

so the number of people facing food insecurity in nations like China, India, Indonesia and Vietnam actually went down at that time,

he said. This time around there is still strong economic growth in these countries, but inflation is much more of a problem,

#he said. So it is possible that the impact could be worse in 2011, especially if food prices stay high.#

#It will take some months for those figures to emerge, he added. Via New york times Share Thissubscribedel. icio. usfacebookredditstumbleupontechnorati b

What a great time to become a vegan! Agriculture secretary Tom Vilsack has approved officially the unregulated planting of Monsantos genetically engineered alfalfa.

In a move that will undoubtedly set a precedent for what comes next (namely, the question of

and nothing less than obliterate our choice as organic consumers to be assured that we are avoiding genetically modified organisms in our food#The Problem with GE Alfalfa GE (genetically engineered) alfalfa has been modified to resist the effects of the weed killer glyphosate, also known as Roundup.

Alfalfa is a perennial crop that is most commonly grown as animal feed for dairy cows and most other livestock.

alfalfa also grows wild along roadsides throughout the country. The issues with GE alfalfa are numerous:

1. Safe for Human Consumption? First is the question of safety. Genetically engineered crops have not been tested for long-range health effects on humans

and wildlife. 2. Contamination of Non-GE Crops Alfalfa plants are pollinated by bees, most of which can travel

and no insurance policy against damages these farmers suffer as a result of GE alfalfa contamination. According to the Center for Food safety

a study of the past 200 GE contamination cases has found that farmers have suffered hundreds of millions of dollars in lost sales.

They sue them. 3. Looming Threat to Organic Meat and Dairy Certified organic products cannot,

So those farmers who grow alfalfa to feed their dairy cows, who in turn are there to produce organic milk?

Theyre screwed if their alfalfa has been contaminated. Its no longer organic#under the law. And you and I, organic consumers that we are#were screwed equally because our choices for organic,

non-GMO dairy and meat products is diminished severely. 4. Increased (Not Decreased) Use of Chemical Weedkillers The USDAS own data shows that the adoption of Roundup Ready (GE) alfalfa would trigger a huge increase in the use

GE alfalfa will be sown in fields across the country this spring. There are a few steps we can take to avoid it.

Getting dairy and meat from small family farms is a good start, but remember that no matter how careful they are,

including the Center for Food safety, that are gearing up to contest this decision in court. At this point, President Obama is the last line of defense.

Hes the only one who can immediately prevent GE alfalfa from being planted this year. Food & Water Watch is running a campaign urging people to send letters to the President asking him to step in.

However based on what Food safety News recently reported, the White house encouraged Vilsack to go with complete deregulation of GE alfalfa so the administration would appear friendly to big business.#

#There is sure to be more news on the horizon about not only GE alfalfa, but other GMO foods as well.

Stay tuned. LINK Share Thissubscribedel. icio. usfacebookredditstumbleupontechnorati o
