#HP Buys Palm In $1. 2 Billion Takeover Hewlet-Packard takes over smartphone makers Palm. HP had been without a credible smartphone branch of the company and the aquisition of Palm sees the worlds largest technology company move into a rising and highly profitable market. HP now has an edge over competitors such Dell and Acer by offering its new devices without ties to operating systems from Google and Microsoft. It would be at their risk to ignore it, said C. L. King & Associates analyst Lawrence Harris. I would say HP looked around and said, we need to be in this space. Google is here, Apple is here. HP has been notably absent in the smartphone category obviously, where the buzz has been dominated by the iphone, said analyst Lou Miscioscia. I dont think they wanted to get left out. Palm had struggled in recent years, despite good reviews for its webos platform, slowly being edged out by a number of rival firms. In the purchase of Palm, HP has combined a operating system and hardware, an edge over rivals such as HTC, who rely on Googles Android operating system. The two successful companies in this space are Apple and RIM and they have integrated hardware and software, Hudson Square analyst Daniel Ernst said. If you are making phones every single day, and you are relying on Microsoft or Google for your next feature set, you are always behind. HP is looking to emulate Apples success in the smartphone market by building a strong portfolio of applications for the webos platform. It currently has just 2, 000 apps, compared to almost 200,000 available in Apples App store. LINK Share Thissubscribedel. icio. usfacebookredditstumbleupontechnorati r
