Ringworm also known as dermatophytosis is not a worm at all: It is a fungal infection consisting of several different species of fungus that feeds on keratin the substance found in hair nails and the outer layer of skin within humans and domesticated animals.

The infection forms a ringlike pattern on skin that sort of looks like a worm burrow. These common household pets (in the United states)

and increasingly popular delicacies (in South america) have more fur and faster metabolisms than any true pig.

#7 Science Careers You Never Knew Existed Snake venom handler? Sex scholar? A career in science doesn't have to mean a job in a dank lab or cubicle.

But it's someone's job to create those fireworks namely a chemist. That chemist designs fireworks with chemicals that emit beautiful colors

when they're heated. For example copper compounds burn blue strontium compounds let off a crimson hue

It's a broad field using tools from biology medicine psychology sociology and other fields.

Snake milkers are animal care specialists who extract the venom of poisonous snakes. Snake venom while not exactly milk is nevertheless a life-giving substance (when used correctly.

The venom deadly on its own is the main ingredient in snakebite antidotes and a wide range of medicines.

Snake milkers have the job of extracting or milking the toxic substance from a snake's fangs.

The venom can be made into a freeze-dried powder that research laboratories use to produce drugs for blood clots heart attacks and high blood pressure.

Scatologist It isn't the most glamorous of careers but scatology the scientific study of excrement can tell scientists a lot about an animal including its habits overall health and presence of disease.

The contents of an animal's poop can reveal its diet which tells scientists where the animal has been.

and fauna which determine its health. The study of feces has led also to advances in human medicine.

For example poop transplants can be an effective means of treating intractable gut infections by reestablishing a healthy bacterial equilibrium.

Laughter therapist Laughter is the best medicine or at least the best therapy. Laughter has been found to reduce stress

and boost the immune system among other benefits. Laughter therapists aim to make patients chuckle but they don't use jokes or comedy.

Instead they lead exercises that help people connect with the deep joyful laughter that babies experience.

Louis Pasteur was the first zymologist discovering that yeast led to fermentation. Some universities even have programs now where students can major in fermentation sciences.

and found it had a grain of truth according to the National institutes of health. Higher-than-normal levels of estrogen in pregnant women's urine scientists speculated may stimulate the germination of seeds

Some 17th-century doctors dipped a ribbon into a pot of a woman's urine; if the smell of the ribbon made the woman gag

But in the 1920s medical researchers were able to identify a hormone human chorionic gonadotropin or hcg that's found only in pregnant women marking the first time a single compound was discovered that could indicate pregnancy status. To determine the presence of hcg a sample of the woman's urine was injected into an immature female mouse frog or rabbit.

and luteinizing hormone and certain medications could yield a false-positive or false-negative result. The 1970s When the sexual revolution arrived medical science was ready:

In 1972 scientists reported for the first time a radioimmunoassay pregnancy test that could distinguish between hcg and luteinizing hormone in a woman's urine.

In 1976 drug maker Warner-Chilcott sought approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for an early-pregnancy test or e. p. t. For $10 women could purchase the two-hour test kit to use in the privacy of her own home;

it included a vial of purified water an eye dropper a test tube and an assortment of compounds including sheep's blood.

Modern pregnancy tests which still rely on the presence of hcg in urine are up to 99 percent accurate depending on the presence of certain medications following the test's instructions accurately

#Americans'Interest in Hemorrhoids Has skyrocketed The number of Americans searching online for information on hemorrhoids

Data gathered from Google searches show that interest in the term hemorrhoids more than doubled between 2008 and 2013 according to a Livescience analysis using Google Trends a tool that shows how often a particular search term is entered in the search engine relative to the total search

The term hemorrhoids was searched about 40000 times weekly between 2004 and 2008 but this number started to rise during mid-2008 crept up to about 80000 weekly searches in 2010â andâ reached nearly 120000 during some weeks in 2013.

and hemorrhoids are a common condition said Dr. Jesse Moore an assistant professor of surgery at University of Vermont College of Medicine and attending surgeon at Fletcher Allen Health care in Burlington VT.

In fact one in three American adults have reported going online to try to figure out what medical condition they

It seems possible that conditions such as hemorrhoids might be among the most searched-for online

because people may be embarrassed to talk about them with a doctor But perhaps they shouldn't be:

Technically everybody has hemorrhoids. Â 7 Embarrassing Health problems What are hemorrhoids? One of the misconceptions about hemorrhoids is that'nobody has it but me.'

'Actually everybody has hemorrhoids but not everybody has symptoms of hemorrhoids Moore told Livescience. Hemorrhoids are normal parts of the human anatomy

and they serve a purpose. These little blood vessels act like water balloons inside the lower rectum and help people control bowel movements.

But sometimes hemorrhoids can become swollen or inflamed causing symptoms such as bleeding or pain. I see a lot of people in my office with complaints of hemorrhoids.

Only about half of the time is it actually that they have hemorrhoids that are said symptomatic Moore.

Because other conditions can cause the same symptoms many people mistakenly think they have hemorrhoids.

The most common condition that people mistake for hemorrhoids are said fissures Moore. Both can cause bleeding.

Fissures which are tears in the skin of the lower rectumâ are treated usually with topical medication applied to the surface of the fissure.

However some patients need surgery he said. Dr. Jeffrey S. Aronoff a colorectal surgeon at Lenox Hill Hospital in New york said he suspects people may be increasing searching for hemorrhoid information

because advertisements about hemorrhoid treatment services are becoming more common. It's important that people be aware where they educate themselves about medical issues

because some health websites have inaccurate information Aronoff said. The best way to avoid getting symptomatic hemorrhoids

or fissures is to avoid constipation and prolonged straining on the toilet. People should eat a high-fiber diet consuming about 30 grams of fiber as well as drinking about 2 liters of water a day Moore said.

Fruits such as apples and pears (with skin) have about 4 to 5 grams of fiber.

A bowl of a high-fiber cereal might have up to 8 grams and a cup of cooked peas lentils or beans has up to 15 grams of fiber.

But there are certain foods that are constipating and should be avoided if people start having problems (bananas for example).

When too much pressure is positioned on the blood vessels in the rectal area hemorrhoids may bulge or become swollen.

Pregnancy heavy lifting and long hours of sitting canâ increase blood flow into the hemorrhoids and result in their engorgementâ increasing the risk of developing symptomatic hemorrhoids Aronoff said. 9 Conditions That Pregnancy May Bring How can hemorrhoids be treated Hemorrhoids

come in two types; there's internal and there's external hemorrhoids Moore said. Internal hemorrhoids cause painless bleeding.

One treatment option for internal hemorrhoids is to use what is called rubberbanding which is strangling the hemorrhoid by tying a rubber band at its base cutting off the blood flow to the hemorrhoid.

This is an outpatient procedure that a doctor performs in the office. External hemorrhoids happen when hemorrhoids become irritated

and blood clots form under the skin. This is called a thrombosed or clotted hemorrhoid and is painfulâ

and can bleed. Â The usual treatment for external hemorrhoids is to excise them. Over-the-counter stuff that people see advertised for hemorrhoids have never been shown in any good scientific study to help hemorrhoids he said.

Generally if people see blood in the stool it's important to see a doctor especially

if they are over 40 years old. A doctor could help make sure the blood is from a hemorrhoid

or a fissure and not from a tumor in the colon doctors said. Also when people experience discomfort in their rectal area

which could be caused by symptomatic hemorrhoids fissures warts or other conditions it's a good idea to see a doctor who can help diagnose the problem.

A lot of times it's not actually hemorrhoids and would respond to different treatments Moore said.

#Ancient Arctic Algae Record Climate Change in'Tree Rings'Bright pink algae that light up the Arctic seafloor like Las vegas neon are also guides to hundreds of years of climate history

a new study shows. From the medieval chill called the Little Ice age to the onset of global warming in the 1800s the coralline algae show how Arctic sea ice has responded to climate swings for the past 650 years.

The findings were published today (Nov 18) in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

For the first time researchers now have ancient sea ice information on a yearly scale said lead study author Jochen Halfar a paleoclimatologist at the University of Toronto in Mississauga Canada.

This is important for understanding the rapid short-term changes that are currently ongoing with respect to sea ice decline Halfar said in an email interview.

Undersea'tree rings'The species are called coralline algae because they deposit coral-like crusts of the mineral calcite on underwater rocks coating the rocks with colorful pink splotches.

However algae are plants and coral are animals.)Because the algae go dormant in the winter

when sea ice blocks incoming sunlight the calcite layers develop visible bands that are similar to tree rings Halfar said.

During the Little Ice age when volcanoes and sun cycle variations caused a global cooling from the 1300s to the 1800s the coral's underwater tree rings narrowed suggesting extensive sea ice cover and short summers.

000-Year-Old Eye Medicine Ancient gray disks loaded with zinc and beeswax found aboard a shipwreck more than 2000 years old may have been used as medicine for the eyes researchers say.

These new findings shed light on the development of medicine over the centuries scientists added. Scientists analyzed six flat gray tablets approximately 1. 6 inches (4 centimeters) in diameter and 0. 4 inches (1 cm) thick that were found in a round tin box

aboard the so-called Relitto del Pozzino shipwreck which was discovered about 60 feet (18 meters) underwater in 1974 on the seabed of the Baratti Gulf off the coast of Tuscany.

The cargo also included medical equipment such as an iron probe and a bronze vessel that may have been used for bloodletting

or for applying hot air to soothe aches. These findings suggest a physician was traveling by sea with his professional equipment the researchers said.

To learn more about these potentially medicinal tablets researchers investigated the chemical mineralogical and botanical composition of fragments of a broken tablet.

In archaeology the discovery of ancient medicines is very rare as is knowledge of their chemical composition the researchers wrote.

The data revealed extraordinary information on the composition of the tablets and on their possible therapeutic use.

The disks were about 80 percent inorganic with zinc making up about 75 percent of the inorganic components.

since ancient times to serve as medicines with the ancient Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder writing that they could help treat the eyes and skin.

and medicines and pine resin may have kept the oil from going rancid and fought microbes due to its antiseptic properties.

Pollen grains were numerous with about 1400 grains per gram seen in the tablets. These came from olive wheat and many other plants such as stinging nettles and alder trees.

However about 60 percent of this pollen came from plants that are pollinated by insects such as bees suggesting they may inadvertently have hitched along in a bee product such as beeswax instead of getting intentionally added to the medicine.

Intriguingly the Latin word for eyewash collyrium derives from a Greek word meaning small round loaves This fact highlights the notion that these small round tablets are linked with eye health.

This study provided valuable information on ancient medical and pharmaceutical practices and on the development of pharmacology and medicine over the centuries the researchers said.

In addition given the current focus on natural compounds our data could lead to new investigations and research for therapeutic care.

Dementia Contrary to previous research a diet rich in antioxidants may not reduce a person s risk for stroke

or dementia a new study says. Researchers analyzed information from more than 5300 people ages 55 and older living in The netherlands.

Fourteen years later about 600 people had developed dementia and 600 had suffered a stroke. People who reported diets high in antioxidants were

just as likely to develop dementia or have a stroke during the study period as individuals who consumed diets that were low in antioxidants.

Interestingly previous studies that used information from this same group of people found a link between consumption of Vitamin e and a lower risk of dementia and between consumption of Vitamin c and a lower risk of stroke.

and nuts the effect on dementia and stroke risk might be said different Devore. For instance a study published last year found that women who ate a lot of citrus fruits such as oranges

The total amount of antioxidants people eat is linked not to stroke and dementia risk. This story was provided by Myhealthnewsdaily a sister site to Livescience.
