#19 Weirdest Effects of the Government Shutdown

The government shutdown was ironic from the moment it began — It all happened over the health care law which started registration the moment the government shut down at midnight on Oct 1.</

Over the days since the United states has witnessed a variety of strange consequences. Here' s a look at the weirdest effects of the shutdown from a panda cam going dark and a hold on new craft beer labels to the hands on a historic Senate clock frozen in place and bored Congressional workers.</

This countdown was published first on Oct 3 at 1: 04 p m. ET.</

Last Friday in anticipation of a nearing government shutdown a herd of ivy-eating goats from the Gateway national recreation area in Sandy Hook N. J. was sent back home to a farm in Rhinebeck N y. The goats were there to help eradicate masses of poison ivy that threatened the historic Fort Hancock situated in the park their owner told news media.</

The National Zoo in Washington D c. was forced to turn off its Panda Cam. While thousands of online fans expressed their sadness over not being able to see the mother and baby panda born to Mei Xian on Aug 23 the zoo tweeted Monday that " The cams (incl. the panda cams) require federal resources especially staff to run. They have not been deemed essential during a#shutdown. "<<a href=http://www. livescience. com/39153-giant-panda-mei-xiang-gives-birth-photos. html>See Photos of Mei Xiang' s Adorable Panda Cub

The Ku klux klan had to cancel a rally planned for Saturday Oct 5 at Gettysburg national military park in Adams County Penn . because the park is closed along with all other National parks because of government shutdown.</

Park officials had defended previously the decision to allow the Maryland-based white supremacist group use of the park saying the group was entitled to its First amendment rights which protects free speech.</

The government shutdown coincided with Yosemite National Park’ s 123rd and NASA' s 55th birthday. There was no one around to celebrate.</

Employees at Craters of the moon national monument in Idaho are exempted from furlough so that they can continue the search for a 63-year-old woman who has been missing for two weeks.</

Dozens of businesses in Washington D c. offered furloughed employees freebies and discounts ranging from food and drinks to museum admissions and even pole-dancing classes according to news reports.</

Members of Congress however are not eligible for these deals at some of these cafes and restaurants. In fact they are asked to<a href=http://www. washingtonpost. com/blogs/going out-guide/wp/2013/10/01/the-nonessential-government-workers-guide-to-cheap-shutdown-eats/>pay double

Federal employees on furlough are barred from checking their work emails during the shutdown. In case the agencies need to contact employees on furlough they can send emails to " home email accounts. "</

Workers whose smartphones are provided and paid for by their agency had to turn in their devices. With no phones and no emails it appears some bored government workers have taken to Craigslist to trawl for<a href=http://cdnl. complex. com/assets/CHANNEL IMAGES/TECH/2013/10/content/1380648750.screenshot20131001at1 32. 19pm. png >casual sex partners

Perhaps for scientists and researchers the shutdown is a situation as grave as if Google had gone down. On numerous scientific websites such as the National institutes of health (NIH) and the database Pubmed a message is posted saying that " due to the lapse in government funding the information on this web site may not be submitted up to date transactions via the website may not be processed and the agency may not be able to respond to inquiries… "<<a href=http://www. livescience. com/28825-most-obvious-science-findings. html>No Duh! The 10 Most Obvious Science Findings
In addition ongoing clinical trials are not accepting new patients and grant applications are not being processed. It is possible that even if the government shutdown is short the consequences for science projects could last for months<a href=http://www. reddit. com/r/askscience/comments/1nikjj/scientists please discuss how the government/>some researchers say
One scientist recalled his experience as a graduate student during the 1995 shutdown and wrote on user-generated news site reddit: " Even though the shutdown ended in January we did not finally get our funds till THE FOLLOWING JULY. This was disastrous since we had April-May fieldwork in the Arctic. "</

American facilities overseas such as military cemeteries and memorials have been closed due to the government shutdown.</

The Department of defense (DOD) had canceled intercollegiate sports for the Army Navy and Air force. As such the football game between the Air force and Army scheduled to take place at a sold-out Annapolis stadium was thought to be a no-go. But Thursday morning the Navy Athletics tweeted: "<<a href=https://twitter. com/search? q=#Navyfootball& src=hash>#Navyfootballgame on Saturday against Air force is a GO. Kickoff 11:30 AM on CBS. No word on the rest of the sports this weekend. "</

The DOD also gave the green light to the football game between the Army and Boston College scheduled for Saturday as well according to news reports.</

Some people have reported sending emails to their Congressperson sometimes to voice complaints about the shutdown only to receive this response for instance:</

" Representative Steve Womack < AR03SWIMA@mail. house. gov></

I appreciate you taking the time to contact me. Unfortunately due to the government shutdown there will be a delay in providing you with a response. Please know that I value your opinion. Should you need immediate assistance please contact my Rogers office at 479-464-0446 or my D c. office at 202.225.4301. "</

Congressman Steve Womack of Arkansas was among the<a href=http://www. livescience. com/40110-government-shutdown-human-nature. html>Republicans involved in the stalematethat caused the government to shut down so that in his own words Americans would be spared " from the pain Obamacare will undoubtedly cause. "</

The Internal revenue service (IRS) is still collecting payments through their EFTPS. gov website.</

" Due to the current lapse in appropriations IRS operations are limited. However the underlying tax law remains in effect and all taxpayers should continue to meet their tax obligations as normal" the IRS states on its website.</

Similarly<a href=http://www. livescience. com/37357-us-intelligence-leaks. html>the National security agency(NSA) too is still working in full force.</

Wall street seemed to stand firm during the start of the government shutdown but things went downhill from there. On Oct 1 U s. stocks rose as investors assumed the shutdown impact would be limited. The Standard & Poor' s 500-stock index added 0. 4 percent in early trading and the Dow jones industrial average rose 0. 2 percent.</

On Oct 2 however U s. stocks fell as investors started to assess the effects of budget impasse Bloomberg News reported.</

The Asteroid Watch program based at NASA' s Jet propulsion laboratory in Pasadena Calif. has ceased activity along with other federally funded agencies. Fortunately however the<a href=http://www. space. com/23035-government-shutdown-dangerous-asteroids-search. html>Minor planet Centerin Cambridge Mass. and the European space agency are still on the watch in case a space rock nears planet Earth.</

While there was an explosive increase in Google searches for government shutdown and healthcare. gov over the last seven days it appears football coach Lane Kiffin and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) sparked even more interest among Americans at least in terms of Google searches.</

In the wake of the shutdown the U s. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) has suspended most of its programs and operations. That includes an<a href=http://www. livescience. com/40225-ivory-crush-canceled-shutdown. html>ivory crushscheduled for Oct 8 2013 near Denver.</

In a no-nonsense signal to elephant poachers the agency was supposed to destroy six tons of illegal ivory goods it has collected over the past 25 years. After the shutdown ends FWS officials will reschedule to public pulverization.<

A near complete<a href=http://www. livescience. com/40218-government-shutdown-smithsonian-t-rex. html>T. rex fossilwas going to be delivered to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural history on Oct 16. But with all Smithsonian facilities mired in shutdown woes the dinosaur's relocation had to be delayed until April 2014.</

The so-called Wankel T. rex was discovered in Montana in late 1980s and it had been housed in the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman for more than two decades. As part of a new loan agreement the fossil is set to spend the next 50 years at the Smithsonian in Washington the most visited natural history museum in the world.</

EmailBahar Gholipour </or follow her<a href=https://twitter. com/alterwired>@alterwired.>Follow Livescience@livescience<a href=http://www . facebook. com/#!/#/livescience target=blank title=http://www. facebook. com/#!/#/livescience>Facebook&</<a href=https://plus. google. com/101164570444913213957/posts target=blank title=https://plus. google. com/101164570444913213957/posts>Google+.>Original article on<a href=http://livescience. com/40155-weirdest-effects-of-shutdown. html target=blank title=http://Livescience. com>Livescience .<>

The hands of the Senate's historic Ohio Clock are frozen at 12:14 according to<a href=http://nbcpolitics. nbcnews. com/news/2013/10/10/20902831-historic-senate -clock-no longer-ticking-thanks-to-shutdown? lite>NBC News. The curators tasked to wind the 11-foot-tall (3. 4 meters) clock have been furloughed last winding the clock on Sept. 30.</

Despite its name and the shield with 17 stars on the front of it the clock is meant not to celebrate the 17th state Ohio's statehood according to the U s. Senate. In 1815 Sen. David Daggett of Connecticut ordered the clock from clockmaker Thomas Voigt. Though Sen. Daggett gave fairly detailed instructions about the clock's appearance he didn't mention anything about it commemorating Ohio or how many stars should be placed on the shield.</

The dial to be about two feet in diameter an hour minute and second hand a Spread eagle on the top and the United states arms at foot. We wish it good and handsome and expect to pay accordingly read the order for the clock according to the U s. Senate website.</

Don' t expect any new craft beers during the shutdown. The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau an arm of the U s. Treasury department is closed meaning no approvals for new breweries recipes and labels.</

" One could think of this shutdown as basically stopping business indefinitely for anyone who didn' t have certain paperwork in place back in mid-August" said Paul Gatza director of the Brewers Association which represents more than 1900 U s. breweries as quoted by<a href=http://abcnews. go. com/Business/wirestory/shutdown-means-beer-craft-brewers-20517927 >the Associated press
What are you missing out on?</

Sour cherry:</Lakefront Brewery in Milwaukee had applied for approval of a sour cherry dark lager called John created by a brewery employee.</

Spring Blonde:</New Belgium Brewing in Fort Collins Colo. is awaiting approval for three recipes with a spokesperson telling the AP the company is worried particularly about the release of Spring Blonde its new spring label.</

12-ounces of Hairy Eyeball:</Lagunitas Brewing Co. in Petaluma Calif. had planned to send in an application to package its autumn Hairy Eyeball in 22-ounce bottles instead of the 12-ounce bottles it comes in now<a href=http://abcnews. go. com/Business /wirestory/shutdown-means-beer-craft-brewers-20517927>the AP reported</a p p
