The paper argues that policymakers should increase nuclear power rather than continuing dependence on fossil fuels. The 2011 disaster at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant should not deter governments from expanding nuclear power according to Hansen

which fuel nuclear power will be replacing.)Nuclear power has prevented already 64 gigatons of greenhouse gas emissions and would prevent the equivalent of another 80 to 240 gigatons again depending on

which fuel it replaces. The paper does acknowledge the serious health and environmental concerns related to storage of nuclear waste.

Fossil fuels are very dirty even if you ignore CO2 from combustion. I read somewhere that coal fire power plants release more radiation (in the form of radioactive impurities being vaporized) into the atmosphere every year than all nuclear power plants ever (including meltdowns.

but the impurities in fossil fuels are destroying our environment. We used to believe that dilution was the solution to pollution

Why can't they take nuclear fuel rods into space and drop them to burn up in reentry to atmosphere?

If a Magnitude 8 earthquake strikes Japan before a fuel pool dangling 100 feet in the air is secured the resulting radioactivity is expected to be at least 40 times that of Chernobyl causing untold millions of cancers across the Northern hemisphere.

Fossil fuels can be replaced much faster than might be imagined. See the same site to understand how and why.

renewable>nuclear>fossil fuel ORRENEWABLE>fossil fuel>nucleardisregarding all money related issues here. But if money were to be put into this equation then most people would support a different one depending on how much of they are of each an environmentalist economist or politician.

and economists would lean toward either fossil fuel or nuclear depending on their viewpoints and info. However a politician would rather go for fossil fuel

or better yet renewable resources as they would want to avoid the somewhat untrue public opinion (Fukushima) on nuclear energy.

My own opinion is that renewable resources trump all but that nuclear would be a little better than fossil fuels.

First of all I would like to point out that without fossil fuels I would think none of us would ever need to question energy production.

Nuclear energy is similar fossil fuels in the way of both safety and efficiency. Fossil fuel usage at its infancy was both dangerous and extremely wasteful.

It is just like that with nuclear energy. Chernobyl and Fukushima were examples of plants built

and even most of those wasteful dangerous first generation nuclear facilities are somewhat better than the most high tech fossil fuels.

Also I believe that fossil fuel technology has been research to almost full potential. Nuclear fission and fusion and combination of the two have yet to reach the potentials

and can be so much better than fossil fuels in both safety and efficiency (with A LOT OF help).

the use of alternative fuels like biofuels electricity and hydrogen; and strong government policies to overcome high costs and influence consumer choices.

In addition alternative fuels to petroleum must be readily available cost-effective and produced with low emissions of greenhouse gases.

Improving the efficiency of conventional vehicles is up to a point the most economical and easiest-to-implement approach to saving fuel

The average fuel economy of vehicles on the road would have exceed to 180 mpg which the report says is extremely unlikely with current technologies.

and fuels including: hybrid electric vehicles such as the Toyota Prius; plug-in hybrid electric vehicles such as the Chevrolet Volt;

some will rely on fuels that are not readily available or have restricted travel range; and others may require bulky energy storage that will limit their cargo and passenger capacity.

This drop in fuel is designed to be a direct replacement for gasoline and could lead to large reductions in both petroleum use

it can also be introduced without major changes in fuel delivery infrastructure or vehicles. The report finds that sufficient lignocellulosic biomass could be produced by 2050 to meet the goal of an 80 percent reduction in petroleum use

Achieving these goals requires that the improved technology focus on reducing fuel use rather than adding greater power

and fuel research and development supported by both government and industry designed to solve the critical challenges in each major candidate technology.

and fuels will require a rigorous policy framework that is more stringent than the proposed fuel economy standards for 2025.

This policy intervention could include high and increasing fuel economy standards R&d support subsidies and public information programs aimed at improving consumers'familiarity with the new fuels and powertrains.

Because of the high level of uncertainty in the pace and scale of technology advances this framework should be modified as technologies develop and as conditions change.

It is essential that policies promoting particular technologies to the public are introduced not before these new fuels

#Biofuel-to-hydrocarbon conversion technology licensedvertimass LLC a California-based start-up company has licensed an Oak ridge National Laboratory technology that directly converts ethanol into a hydrocarbon blend-stock for use in transportation fuels.

The ORNL technology offers a new pathway to biomass-derived renewable fuels that can lower greenhouse gas emissions and decrease U s. reliance on foreign sources of oil.

Vertimass is pleased very to be partnering with ORNL to commercialize this revolutionary technology that can broaden the market for alternative fuels said Vertimass chairman William Shopoff.

The resulting liquid can be blended at various concentrations into gasoline diesel and jet fuels without negatively affecting engine performance.

After mixing with petroleum-derived fuels the blend-stock does not require modifications to the existing distribution infrastructure.

plus it can be added to diesel and jet fuel. It's completely consumer-transparent. Vertimass anticipates that the ORNL technology will be in demand by existing corn-based ethanol production plants as well as new refineries coming online that aim to convert non-food crops such as switchgrass

Commercialization will lead to the widespread use of proprietary Vertimass technology for low cost production of sustainable transportation fuels for aircraft and heavy and light duty vehicles from multiple sources of biomass on a large scale.
