Alternative method for farmsan antibacterial product manufactured by a Malaysian company has become a reliable substitute for antibiotics for many farmers in China. THE imminent ban on antibiotics in agricultural and livestock farming has prompted Chinese farmers to use other alternatives to ensure the safety of their produce and poultry. Farmers have gradually found solutions for antibiotic growth promoters which have been used widely in the industry for a long time. However, these products develop drug-resistant bacteria and may be harmful to human beings who consume the produce and poultry. Interestingly, the antibacterial Orgacids product manufactured by Malaysia homegrown Sunzen Biotech Bhd has quickly become a reliable substitute for many farmers in Shandong Shanxi, Hebei, Henan and Inner Mongolia provinces. Qingdao Tianrui Poultry Technology Co Ltd general manager Li Chao said chicken egg production in his farm in Qingdao, Shandong, had seen better results after using Orgacids. oepreviously, we used 100%antibiotics in our animal feed for the chickens. But now, we have reduced it to only 30%and mixed the feed with others like Orgacids and locally-made probiotics, he told representatives from Sunzen Biotech and Malaysia ambassador to China Datuk Iskandar Sarudin who visited the farm recently to see for himself how the green product fared in China. Li said the Chinese Agriculture Ministry had recommended the use of Orgacids probiotics, acidifiers and other green products in animal feed as part of their efforts to phase out the harmful antibiotics. oeafter using Orgacids and probiotics, we managed to save about 5%the volume of animal feed. We will continue using them and I think the results will be more significant in the long run, he added. Another egg farmer, Zeng Xiaoyong, said he blended Orgacids with other ingredients like palm kernel extracts in his animal feed to improve absorptivity by the chickens. He said he saved about 700 yuan (RM350) a day on his feed cost after switching from soy bean to the cheaper palm kernel extract for its mixture with animal feed. Not only is the Orgacids product being used in chicken egg farms it is used also in feed for pigs, fish, prawns and cattle in China. Zhang Zhuofei, whose family runs a pig farm in Yantai in Shandong said he was happy with the results yielded using Orgacids as they managed to save about 4%on the volume of feed for the pigs. oewe have reduced the use of antibiotics and other medication to kill germs by 40%.%Previously, our pigs took six months to grow but now with Orgacids, the growth period has been shortened to five-and-a-half months. oehowever, it also depended on the type of pigs and the living conditions in the pig farms, he said. Zhang said ingredients such as crushed corn would be blended with the solid Orgacids in the animal feed at his farm which supplied more than 100 pigs a month to buyers in the Jiangsu province. However, he added that the results of using Orgacids on piglets were less impressive as the overuse of the acid-based product would be harmful to the piglets stomach and intestines. Orgacids first came to China in May last year starting of with three chicken and pig farms in Shanxi recommended by China Agricultural University. Together wih Sunzen Biotech, the university conducted a two-month test in the farms and found that the livestock had shown significant growth after using the product. Loh Wee Keng, general manager of Regal Plus (China) Co Ltd, the importer of the product in China, said the university wanted to develop the project together with Sunzen Biotech but because of differences in approach, they went ahead with their own distribution channel to develop its market. oeby October last year, our product had penetrated Shandong province and four other provinces. We will develop our market in Hunan Hubei and Zhejiang provinces, he said. He said his company would send technical staff to the farms to ensure farmers used the product correctly so that they would see the results within a week. The company would follow up with meetings with the farmers to get their feedback on the product, he added. Sunzen Lifesciences research and development director Dr P. C. Kok said Orgacids could be added to animal feed and given to livestock continuously. oethe farmers need not stop feeding Orgacids to their livestock. It is unlike antibiotics where you have to stop using it during the withdrawal period to let the body system clear. oethe recommended dose is 1. 5kg of Orgacids to a tonne of animal feed. But there are farmers who have used up to 5kg in a tonne of feed and did not face any problems, he said. Dr Kok said Orgacids was proven to be able to kill bacteria like Salmonella, E coli and Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus in the livestock digestive system. oesalmonella will be cured within two to three weeks after the chicken is fed with Orgacids and the ammonia level of its faeces will drop within three days, he added
