#Farmers Rip up Experimental Golden Rice Plants In The Philippinesa decade and a half after it was invented first genetically engineered rice may soon grow in farmer's fields for the first time in the Philippines. Just as some in the U s. oppose GMO technology however so do some Filipinos. After seeing the BBC's report this week that Philippine scientists are close to submitting golden rice rice engineered to make Vitamin a for regulatory approval I looked for local news on the development. Farmers entered test fields and ripped up 400 experimental plants Philippine tabloid paper Remate reported yesterday. It was all over in 15 minutes Malaya Business Insight reports. One of the farmers'worries is the cost of GMO seeds and the privatization of the nation's staple crop spokesman Bert Autor told Remate. The International Rice Research Institute expects golden rice's price will be the same as regular rice. The rice's inventors and patent-holders arranged for their licenses to be available without royalties. The protesting farmers uprooted nearly all of the plants in one field so that one field test can't continue according to a statement from the Philippine Rice Research Institute. Nevertheless golden rice research in the Philippines will continue the institute said in another statement. The farmers also believed that golden rice would be unsafe to eat. Others in the country share their worries. In June a group called Green Moms held a rally in Quezon City to protest golden rice. Protestors Philstar talked with were worried primarily about the rice's safety for kids. Both the farmers and the Green Mom members seemed opposed to genetically engineered food generally. Many major science and health organizations say that just because a food is modified genetically doesn't mean it's unsafe. Groups such as the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the World health organization support the testing of new GMO plants as they're developed as each could affect human health differently. Safety tests would be part of the Philippine government's approval process for golden rice Philippine Rice Research Institute project leader Antonio Alfonso told the BBC.@@Wonder It does not work that way with Rice farming. Rice is grown in Paddies which are swampy and water filled A lot of the work is done my hand or with the assistance of animals. Also most farmers in the Philippines are not wealthy so they could not afford expensive equipment even if they wanted to. Anti-GMO things like this are based off of ignorance of Science and misinformation and the entire thing is just sad. Some people actually want the masses to be sick and starving so that they can blame the situation on The Rich Capitalists. Putting a tomato or squash gene for Vitamin a in rice is to them a sinister act. For countless generations civilization has used selective breeding and splicing to modify existing strains of plants we grow for food. Corn being the easiest to name. Corn today is nothing like their ancestors. And without the science we have had today they no idea if those changes could harm the nutritional value. People living in the stone ages...mitej invokes the same fallacy namely âÂ#Âoescientistsã¢Â# don't lie âÂ#Âoescientistsã¢Â# can't lie. âÂ#Âoescientistsã¢Â# can be trusted with whatever they say or don't say. âÂ#Âoescientistsã¢Â# didn't question the accusation that Spain sank the U s s. Maine. âÂ#Âoescientistsã¢Â# didn't contradict Eisenhower when he declared the U s. didn't fly spy U-2 planes over Russia. Quislings will say that that was a matter of patriotically protecting the American agenda. What proof is there that this isn't part of an agenda the crooks in power don't paint as âÂ#Âoepatrioticã¢Â# in order to give those who cooperate a chance to pretend well meaning? âÂ#Âoescientistsã¢Â# didn't analyze the questionable accounts in the âÂ#Âoenayirahã¢Â# incident to prove that was engineered an fraud. âÂ#Âoescientistsã¢Â# didn't mention what indicated there were no banned weapons systems in Iraq. âÂ#Âoescientistsã¢Â# didn't prevent the profitable shilling of thalidomide Resulin Vioxx fen phen Bextra Celebrex. In the early 1800's the American Medical Association actually declared that it would revoke the licenses of doctors who washed their hands. Even now Slate is advertising a planned movie about the competition between âÂ#Âoeacademiciansã¢Â# Othniel Charles Marsh and Edward Drinker Cope over discoveries of new dinosaur species reportedly leading to the wrong head being put on an apatosaurus body and âÂ#Âoescienceã¢Â# letting it sit there for almost a century. âÂ#Âoescientistsã¢Â# didn't warn about the danger of radium in clock and watch dials as well as other items. Shills will say they didn't know they didn't have an understanding of the workings of the cell that would make it vulnerable to radiation and they didn't even know about radiation.''''As far as they knewã¢Â# there was no danger. Where is the proof that they know enough about the workings of the cell to know what genetically modified foods will do to them. âÂ#Âoeas far as they knowã¢Â# or are willing to admit given their proven willingness to lie or withhold the truth there is no danger but that proves nothing. âÂ#Âoescienceã¢Â# actually has a very bad history of meaning what it said to the âÂ#Âoerank and fileã¢Â#Â. They paint a very rosy picture of themselves when issues of their lies are not in the forefront. Given the degree of trust they claim they deserve and reliability they insist they offer not providing warnings about the limits to the assurances they give alone is tantamount to lying! They deceitfully give the impression what they are saying can be trusted 100%with no provisos. And Trooper Bri trundles the same lie cravens use to try to âÂ#Âoejustifyã¢Â# genetic engineering saying that humanity carried on selective breeding for thousands of years. That was not genetic engineering. They were simply enhancing processes that would have happened normally. They did not invent new genetic material. They did not introduce alien genetic material into plants or animals Like so many lies the safety of genetically modified food relies on yet other lies. I'm sorry but it is scientifically proven by large studies that the golden rice is nothing but a scam. It does nothing or very little for the supply of the body with Vitamin a. The reasons are firstly that the body needs additional fat in the diet to absorb vitam A and secondly that the quantity of rice an average young child has to eat to get its daily dosis of Vitamin a is about 300-400g. An adult would need to double that dosis at least. The reason for the malnutrition is the lack of fat in the diet. Its needed this is why you should eat your carrots with butter: -Dont get me started on the reasons for the propagation of GMO tech eg. further industrialization of the agriculture better control of the farmers etc. The main problem with GMO tech ist that its self replicating. Once introduced in the environment it nearly can't be stopped. There are technologies like terminator-genes but those are equally dangerous.@@Wonder you have to be a farmer in the Philippines or at least have lived among them to be able to make that kind of assumption. I have. farmers are folks to if ripping them off the ground is a sign of protest & their feelings they'd do so . and if this involved a raid --which it usually is--one cannot have the luxury of being scientific or be luxurious about it right? Down with GMO!!Down with Monsanto & its ilk!!Heck no we won't Gee-Moe Heck no we won't Gee-Moe--cheesy i know..Say yea to Cheese!!!Folks who want to promote GMO products need to take a page out of folks who popularized organic foods. They need to make GMO products accessible only to the rich and fashionable. Companies with GMO products need to somehow IMPLY that GMO products make people smarter stronger and/or live longer. Really no different than folks who suggest that organic foods are somehow safer or healthier for consumers. We are amazed always that the PR companies hired by these big food corporations never understood that. http://www. rainydaymagazine. com We Entertain When It Rainsgm rice puts small farmers out of business due to the high cost of seed. One bad season and they're broke. Gives rebirth to the soviet collective farms. Still wondering why we can't comment on the fetal pain article and why a feminazi from salon magazine vs. a peer reviewed scientific journal is'science'@julianpenrodthe scientific method worksã¢Â# and when applied it is very effective at spotting frauds in our own ranks. However scientists are mostly powerless to do anything about the information that they have. The power lies in the hands of the politicians and also the businessmen. Also people do not like to hear things that disturb their comfort. When a course of action is suggested that does this chances are that it will be ignored selectively...Farmers entered test fields and ripped up 400 experimental plants Philippine tabloid paper Remate reported yesterday...Generally speaking I was always under the impression a tabloid was considered not a reliable source of information e
